Heat rises. Don't believe all the fiction, they just can't survive all that cold.

It's still pretty large though. I think that picture is the 4 qt one, so the size comparison is off a bit. We're talking about something that's nearly a foot in diameter and solid. It's going to look a lot more bulky than a bag with books in it, and frankly, why would someone have a bag with books in it at a marathon?

First of all, literally hundreds of thousands of people carry backpacks large enough to conceal this device in the city, daily. There was no way to prevent this, there is no way to prevent it from happening again, today. It's part of the risk you have to accept to not live in a totalitarian police state, if someone wants to kill or injure random people, they can. Trivially. They almost always are caught, that's the deterrent we rely on. The same one that prevents people from just stabbing strangers to death walking down the street. If that deterrent fails, people die. That's what happened. There is no "solution".

That can't be the solution to everything. I don't think there's enough brown people in Boston to justify bombing it.

To prevent bombing. Modern warfare in a nutshell.

Boston's secret weapon is the lamp post. They're there on every sidewalk, every 50ft, immobile, blending into the hub-bub until they're all but forgotten. They patiently wait for that perfect victim. Then they attack - ruthlessly. There is no preparing for the assault, nor is there a proven defensive tactic to lessen the damage.

Be warned.

It's just surprising that they weren't spotted. I'd think that "big bulky duffle bag with something large and solid in it" would be incredibly out of place at a foot race.

Smiley: dubious
No it wouldn't.

You don't get to many races do you? Virtually everyone is going to have a larger bag like at big backpack or a gym bag, or at minimum every coach, trainer, etc. You're going to have warm ups, extra shoes (many runners wont race in the same shoes they warm up in, and you aren't wearing one of those 2 pairs home, especially if you have some nasty blisters), perhaps a change of clothes, food and water (Gatorade and those energy pouch things?), some kind of first aid kit, all of your personal items (wallet, keys, phone, etc). They're going to be in some kind of gym bag or backpack, and many of them are going to be quite large. You can't run with it obviously, so you're going to hand it to your spouse/coach/family who are going to have it near the end of the race for you when you finish. It's probably heavy so they're going to set it down at some point.

Go to any race and I promise you'll see dozens if not hundreds of them; 27,000 runners means 27,000 bags.

Which one has the bomb?

The one with a pressure cooker in it, obviously.

Speaking of, I'm not really sure I understand the source of some media types mocking the whole pressure cooker angle. Yesterday, when they determined that a pressure cooker was used as the "body" of the bomb, state and federal authorities sent out messages to other cities and officials saying "Hey, be on the watch for this stuff".

To me, this makes perfect sense. If it was an on-going effort, it stands to reason they're going to stick with what works and not reinvent their bomb for each occasion. Thus, if you found a random bag with a pressure cooker in somewhere beyond a Bed Bath & Beyond, it should be regarded with above average suspicion. Others apparently thought this was the jumping off point for "lololpressure cooker... government is soooo stupid what losers".

I guess some folks just need an angle.

A plane is kind of like a pressure cooker when it slams into a building.

Fuckin' uncanny.

Going through that worried panic again while trying to get in touch with my family brought a couple of flashbacks to 9/11. Thankfully this time it took all of 2 minutes to reach everyone, unlike before where we were left wondering for a couple of days about my uncle.

Planes are really big, though. People should have seen it easily. Easily preventable, yo. We should get a few IT people on National Security.

Yes aside from the details, I was simply addressing the order of events.

9/11
Terrorist sh*t goes down
Mail found with Anthrax

4/15
Terrorist sh*t goes down
Poisoned Letter found, suspicious letter found.
I bet suspicious letters arrive at the white house daily. They only become newsworthy after a tragedy.

On a more serious note (more serious than planes in duffel bags anyway), the "suspicious substance" in the letter to Obama tested positive for ricin.

Edit: I maybe take that back. Conflicting reports.

Ricin is made from castor beans, and the main exporter is China. I bet the letter read "PAY YOUR BILL!"

A suspect has been identified, apparently. Local news just started reporting it.
