Quote:
In a statement, the pontiff said: "After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.

"I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.

"However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me.

"For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is."

article.

Hopefully we'll get someone more progressive in his place.

Good joke.

In all seriousness though I wasn't aware that Popes were allowed to resign. If they were why the hell did they let the Pole go on for as long as he did not even knowing his own fucking name?

They can resign, it's just that nobody did since 1400something. Ratzinger supposedly already asked to resign before he was elected as pope but John Paul wouldn't let him.
He also was one of the people doing all the pope's work when the last one was hardly more than a zombie so he might've realised that that's not exactly the way to go.

Edit: And I said more progressive, which isn't too much of a stretch. Smiley: wink

Yeah suppose not. Kind of weird though. Why even accept the position if you wanted to resign previously?

Popestakes!

Disappointing that he didn't die. We'll miss all the talk of hitting him in the head with a tiny hammer. I have to research the candidates now so I can effectively handicap my pope betting.

If I recall correctly, they took a damn long time electing him because they couldn't really find a suitable candidate so saying no would've been rather much of a **** move.

I think he said at the start that he'd resign if he couldn't handle it anymore healthwise so they've had 7 years to prepare this time.

Yeah the Catholic Church isn't exactly the best for keeping up to date with their "To do" list, though. Smiley: tongue

As a lapsed Catholic whom was a big fan of Pope John Paul III, & disliked Benedict, I'm good with this.

Not a chance in any real sense. They don't pick someone who isn't a company man for these positions.

As for retirement, the Pope is the supreme head of the Church, period. If he decides he's going to retire, there's no veto power to stop him from doing so. If he decides he's not going to retire, there's no mechanism for removing him.

Which goes right back to my first statement -- they don't pick someone who they're not 100% sure is going to stay the course.

I believe according to Cannon Law since Vatican 2, that you just murder him and pretend he died of natural causes. Is that not correct?

I was pretty surprised to see this. My Grandmother was a devout Catholic, I wonder what she would have thought were she still around. Regardless, I doubt it will result in a big change in the church.

Unless Tom Hanks gets involved.

How about a black guy first?

At least I read that some Nigerian guy is amongst the candidates you can bet on to become the next pope. Don't know if he's actually black or not.

If that was true, wouldn't the one that resigned in 1294 or so have been the second to last one? Or any of the other handful of popes who have resigned.

Peter Turkson of Ghana, and he's papabili only because his name has come up a couple of times recently, most notably for his views on Islam.

IIRC, it's not the pope resigning that's the issue, it's that Benedict was the second-to-last pope named in the prophecy. The next one is "Peter the Roman," who will see the end of the Catholic Church. Something like that. The crazies were hoping that Benedict would last for a good long time, because they don't want to see the end of the Church.
#25 Feb 11 2013 at 9:59 AM Rating: Good
So don't pick anyone named Peter, or who is from Rome or Italy. Problem solved.

If in doubt, always use 'who'. If you use 'whom' and get it wrong, everyone thinks you're a pretentious ****.

Though, as my grandfather used to say, whom gives a fuck what they think.
