Over the past couple of months, we've had one industrious woman who goes around and picks through the neighborhood's recycling, poaching any bottles she may find. Now, I get that she may be down and out, but it bothers me that she's picking through my stuff. Furthermore, the garbage company making money off of recyclables keeps the rate low, so over time the impact of her poaching bottles could cost me money.

Now, I've asked her politely to stop picking through my recycling bin. I've told her forcefully to stop, and I've written down her license plate along with a basic description of her and her vehicle. I really don't want to file a police report, but it's annoying to me, and I shouldn't have to adjust my schedule and bring the trash out in the morning because she can't respect my property.

I'm pretty sure I'm overreacting, but I can't be the only person on here who would be angry about something like this.

You asked her several times and she isn't respecting your wishes. Time to file a police report.

Sex.

Tell her you saw her stealing and lost all control. Be consistent about it and she'll stop stealing so much; if not you probably won't care.

I'd involve the cops, or small flashbang explosives.

I thought about just smearing the bottles with dog poo. Or gluing them all together.

Because I'm a child.

Build a custom recycle bin that's basically a giant raccoon trap.

I'm not sure how it works in your city, but when you put your trash in the city's containers and out on the curb for pickup, it technically becomes *their* property. I guess file a report with the agency that does the trash pick up, but I doubt it's your job to involve the cops, or that you should really waste their time with such nonsense.

As far as the **** idea, my ex didn't like the can lady digging through our bin so he'd bag up all the cans with the cat litter. Personally, we've been having someone around lately going through the recycling bins, but he's on foot, and trudging through the snow, so other than the first time when he dumped the bin out on the lawn for easy access, he's been little trouble and I have no problem with him collecting pennies from our trash. Not to mention, 3/5 times the garbage companies strews trash down the road anyway, so he's really not any worse.

What time do they pick stuff up? Can you just put it out in the morning? I'm all for reporting as well, but I wonder how much it would take to get them to do anything about it.

Sounds logical.

I could put it out in the morning. I've tried leaving it up in front of the garage door so that I'll see it on the way to my car, but she's come up the driveway to pick through it, so I'd have to leave the bins in the garage, where I forget to bring them to the street. And I kind of think that I shouldn't have to adjust my behaviour because of someone else's lack of respect.

Heck, if she had just come to the door and asked if I minded, I probably would have just said to take them.

As soon as she came onto your property it became a trespassing felony. Put some "No Trespassing" signs up and put the cans in front of your garage door again. If she goes up the driveway again record it and call the cops.

Hmm. A citizen of the "Land of Opportunity" shows initiative by commercially exploiting your discarded items, and you want to call in the cops?

Selfish, inconsiderate behaviour on your part.

FFS. If they're harming your recycling contractor's income, let them police their own damn business. Otherwise, why not leave her be?

I don't mind people taking my trash. In fact, I use them as a reliable source to get rid of large items without having to pay anything extra. Smaller items I think someone might find useful I'll set aside on the curb and let some dude take that old box of VHS tapes to sell for 10¢ each at the flea market. Provided they don't make a mess, more power to 'em.

But if I asked someone to stop pawing through my trash and they steadfastly refused, I'm sure I'd have an issue with it as well.

It's not really worth worrying about IMO. When you look at the total costs (including subsidies), recycling generally costs more money than it saves on net. If you're putting your recycling into a blue bin on the curb for the trash company to pick up, you're basically giving it to someone else anyway. I don't believe that the trash company really cares about the total dollar amount they can get for what's in the recycling bins at all (it can't possibly make up for the costs required to pick it up). They get a subsidy from the city for doing it, and the city's interest isn't about making money either. It's about making people feel good about their city being so responsible. Of course, that's mostly a crock as well. If you've ever actually gone to a recycling center (where the recycling ends out, not where it's picked up), a large majority of it just sits in separate piles from the landfills the normal garbage goes into. Most of the money goes into picking it up from people, not into actually using it again in any useful way, and most stuff that we recycle never gets actually recycled at all.

If it really bothers you, or you think you're somehow being stolen from, then save your own recycling and take it down to a center once a month for the buck or two you'll get in return. Or you can just allow the individual to do it instead of the trash company and just shift around where the money goes a bit. Think of it as a service. You'd probably have to pay someone to take that stuff off your hands (and technically, you are), but here's someone willing to do it for free! It really doesn't hurt you or anyone else at all, so why worry about it?

But I added in controversial stuff about the ineffectiveness of recycling, increasing the odds of someone getting their panties in a wad and responding with some form of contrived outrage, thus contributing to the life blood of this forum. Why do you hate the forum? Smiley: oyvey

Public shaming. Tell all your neighbors to be on the lookout for her. Post a sign near the bins that says "DEAR <her name> PLEASE STOP GOING THROUGH MY TRASH. IF YOU REALLY ARE THAT HARD UP FOR CASH COME INSIDE AND I WILL GLADLY DROP A FIVER IF YOU GUM MY BEEFSTEAK."
