I suppose it depends on if they thought they were being original or if they were intentionally riffing on the full page MoveOn.org New York Times ad during the Iraq hearings.

At best, it shows incredibly poor judgement from your CIA Director. At worst, it's leverage for blackmail or some other release of classified info.

worse =/= worst

I pretty much just assume that a bad breakup let to her threatening to use the information against him. Not necessarily actually turning to blackmail, but making it clear that it was a possibility.

There's only one defense against it, which is to release the information on your own terms instead.

I am a little surprised he resigned over it though. Would it have hurt to ride the storm until you could see how much people even cared? I mean, it's not like he's an elected official.

Of course, that's assuming it wasn't a personal choice, protect his marriage, yadda yadda. Resigning takes him, and his family, out of the spotlight much faster.

From what I've heard, Obama asked Petraeus to stay on but Petraeus was set on resigning. Whether it was an honor thing or a family thing or feeling he was compromised or what, who knows.

Some people are suggesting he resigned because he was going to testify before Congress in a week about Benghazi. That seems unlikely. For one thing, Petraeus is respected by both sides of the aisle (he was the commanding general in Iraq for GWB) so this isn't like the GOP salivating to attack Eric Holder. For another thing, Congress can subpoena him to testify even if he's a private citizen. Still, I guess the "He had to take a dive to protect Obama from scandal" line fits some people's narrative better than the reality.

The first key official in the Obama administration to leave his post is CIA Director David Petraeus.

The Daily Mail reports that he “stepped down to deal with the ‘personal and professional issues’ surrounding his relationship with a woman who is not his wife.”

Sources tell NBC News says that “Mike Morrell, the deputy CIA director and a longtime CIA officer, would likely be offered the job as acting director but with the understanding that he may be elevated to the job permanently at some point.”

Tom Ricks has a behind the scenes look: “I am told that President Obama tried to talk Petraeus out of resigning, but Petraeus took the samurai route and insisted that he had done a dishonorable thing and now had to try to balance it by doing the honorable thing and stepping down as CIA director.”

The Samurai way would have been to slash open his belly while Obama goes Highlander on him.

Regardless of whether you meant that as a joke or not, it is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard you say. And given your posts on all things Gay, that's saying a lot.

I think she was joking in agreement that he shouldn't have resigned by showing how silly it would be if you look at it in a "normal" person's life.

Beyond the standard issues with a high ranking intelligence official having an affair, choosing to do so with a published author has to rank just under "Affair with Natasha Fatale" on the poor choices meter. What's that, bad break-up and embittered ex-mistress? Your story is soon to be available on hardback and Kindle?...

You mean getting caught by the FBI, right? I agree with that. The idea that most powerful men are faithful to their wives is a quaint fantasy.

Sure. Whatever the rate is of CIA directors banging chicks besides their wife, when it's public it's time to go.

I guess when they meant that this would be a close race, they meant the popular vote without Cali?
