Tell that to the people in this thread who drink 250oz of diet soda a day and still weigh 400+ pounds.
If you're drinking diet soda and nothing else in your diet or your routine changes what do you expect? Caffeine isn't some magic bullet, and eliminating it isn't going to just make the problems vanish. I'm not saying get an IV of Folgers attached to your carotid artery, but a cup or two a day of just black coffee is gonna do more good than bad provided the rest of your routine changes as well. More exercise and carefully watching your calorie intake. Eliminating something that really doesn't hurt is just more stress that will make everything else that much tougher.

Okay, you obviously didn't read anything else I've posted. But that's okay. I agree with you 100%, I just don't think encouraging people to drink caffeine to further their weightloss is a thing.

If not the carotid, where would the optimal spot for a coffee IV be? Or would you suggest blowing lines of grind to be a more effective method of intake?

I prefer to use French Roast grounds as a sort of dip, letting the bulge sit in my lip as a direct route. Though, I guess I'm just more of a "casual" user.

Guys, I think we all know the solution here.

Amphetamines. Anyone know a good way to get an Adderall prescription? Smiley: wink

If I had health insurance, I'd probably be back on ADD meds.

Yeah, and doctors will prescribe amphetamines for obesity as well. Come on, Obamacare!

I cut back on my coffee because I used to simply drink far too much. I went to the doctor before and was getting high blood pressure results and coffee was one of the things I cut back on (large cup in the morning but that's it for the day vs 12-14 Dixie cups throughout the day). I also put Splenda in it now rather than sugar since it was just empty calories. For the single cup it may not matter much but 12 cups throughout the day with sugar added up really fast.

I have friends who will drink two or three large Dunkin Donuts iced coffees, extra-extra, every day and wonder aloud why they can't seem to lose any weight.

I've successfully boycotted Dunkin Donuts entirely for about 10 years now. Their coffee is crap which is why everyone puts extra extra everything in it.

Their donuts are even worse than their coffee.

You could always make your own ECA stack (ephedrine, caffeine, aspirin). You can buy bronkaid from Walgreens for $7-10 last I saw. Just buy the caffeine pills a lower dose of aspirin and take 2-3 times per day. There are studies that show that this is effective so long as you don't mind the potential increase in risk of death.

I weigh in tomorrow so will know then what I have lost since last Monday. I hope to be at the point where I can use the scale at the gym pretty quickly. I felt amazing walking into work this morning or as amazing as I can feel after coming back for the first day after a week off. I'm obviously still at a reall unhealthy point weightwise, but I feel good about my progress and think I'm at a good place right now with my diet and exercise routine. My mistake the first time I lost weight way back when was not having a set diet or routine. As soon as my exercise cut out, I started gaining weight slowly until I reached where I was earlier this year.

Around here, a large percentage of people put extra extra everything in any coffee, regardless of where it comes from.

I only drink coffee in the mornings for the most part. I might have a cup in the afternoon on occasion, but that's rare. I use sugar and no cream or anything else. I don't feel like the coffee with one spoon of sugar is the problem. It's everything else. Smiley: laugh

Death is caused by swallowing small amounts of saliva over a long period of time.

Ok. So, I'm not a fitness guru, I'm not a trainer, I don't know everything. I'm going to give pointers that are working for me.

Find a gym that is easy to get to. "Easy to get to" is more important than almost any other consideration. You will not go if it's a pain in the rear to get there or you have to do something you wouldn't normally be doing anyway. My gym is at the mid way point between my house and work. I drive past it, so there's no excuse and if I feel lazy I feel like a bag of crap passing by it. I tried the "better" gym, and it was better, much better, when I managed to drag my @55 out of bed and drive across town to go there.

I go in the morning before work. After a day of work the last thing you want to do is go to the gym and if you do go you're likely to slack because you've had a crap day and just want to get it over with. It's hard, ridiculously hard, at first but becomes necessary very quickly (you'll feel horrible if you don't do it once you're used to it). No excuses, go to bed as early as you need to, pack your lunch and gym bag the night before (I pack my gym bag when I get home from work and swap out my dirty clothes and towel for clean stuff). Your 45m-1hr at the gym is an extension of your work day. You are to be there at a certain time, schedule it.

Your gym bag should always be ready to go and visible at the front door. It reminds you that you need to go, and reduces the barrier to entry effect.

Going to the gym in the morning will help with the drinking. After a week or two of trying to get yourself motivated you'll find you don't drink as much simply because it makes your morning that much harder. (fyi alcohol encourages estrogen production which limits muscle growth)

The gym washroom just became your new grooming station. You do everything you would do in the morning there, shave etc, you no longer shower at home. It’s all about reducing barrier to entry. All of your habits should lead to the gym being the place you need to be for that 45-1hr period.

Eat a small breakfast BEFORE you go to the gym. By small I mean half a little kiddie bowl of Vector cereal, or some fruit. Cantaloupe is fantastic here as your body doesn’t need to digest it. It’s instant energy due to the dextrose that it naturally contains, have it pre cut up in containers in the fridge so you can grab and go if you’re in a hurry. You are not trying to fill yourself here (nothing worse than working out on a full stomach) just put something in your stomach to give you an energy boost during your workout. I cannot stress enough how important this is and you won’t realize it until you try it a few times. You’ll be able to do more with the same amount of effort. Eat a larger breakfast afterwards. I alternate between picking up a sandwich at the deli in the mall where my gym is and bringing something yummy in my gym bag.

Only have food in the house that is stuff you should be eating. Unhealthy choices are ok occasionally, but don’t have 2 bags of chips in the cupboard, you will eat them before you will take the time to make something better. Peanuts are good.

Buy bottled water, keep it in the fridge. Keep your beer in the cupboard. This solves two issues. 1 You will drink cold bottled water instead of other options as long as it’s in the fridge in front of your face as it’s easy to grab. 2 you will drink bottled water because it’s cold and your beer is warm and in the cupboard. (There’s a pattern developing here)

I have tons more detail to add here but short on time. Ultimately the trick is to make the things that are bad for you less attractive than the things that are good for you without flat out depriving yourself. Have the beer in the house so you don’t buy some on the way home, but have it in the cupboard so you have to make a conscious decision to put it in the fridge to drink in a couple of hours (you’ve just destroyed the impulse buy part of the habit which is the only tough part to break)

I’ve dropped 20 lbs over the last few months, and that’s while gaining probably 4-5 lbs of muscle, and I don’t work out that hard. Most days I’m on the treadmill walking 4 mile/hr on a 5 degree uphill slope because I’m too lazy to do anything else but it keeps me showing up for the days I’m “ready to go” and want to be more adventurous. I go every day with few exceptions. I even get up on the weekends just to maintain my body’s schedule so I don’t skip during the week.

Don’t worry about the numbers, they don’t really matter, you’ll know you’re doing well when you look in the mirror and there’s nothing better than tying your shoes without huffing and puffing.

ALWAYS remember the gym is not an option it’s a part of your daily schedule, you can’t skip it to accommodate some mundane task.

Weight Watchers is good to me. If you treat it like a video game (which is pretty easy with their browser based tracker) it's almost fun. I'm down almost thirty pounds from my heaviest and still have a ways to go, but I know I'm doing it the healthiest way possible and I don't feel deprived at all.

Dinner tonight is 3 oz of pan seared cube steak, half a stir fried yellow pepper, and whole wheat bread spritzed with olive oil and tossed with a bit of Jane's Mixed Up Salt, with a sugar free Red Bull Jaeger Bomb and a glass of water, which will probably be followed up by some frozen yogurt. WW isn't about starving yourself, it's about sensible indulgence coupled with getting the right amount of exercise and proper nutrients.

And yeah, cutting down on beers is going to do you a lot of good. I'd stick with a single case a week as your initial limit, and eventually try to drop it down to one a day.

Stayed under 1500 calories today, managed to do 45 minute walk in the morning + 15 to work from the parking lot + 35 minutes at lunch + 15 minutes back to parking lot. Now off to bed to rinse, lather, and repeat for tomorrow.

Oh, and managed to post a ZAM article and write a new one. Go go productive day!

If 1500 is making you hungry all of the time up the amount a bit, you'll binge otherwise, you need to bring it down in stages so your stomach adjusts.
