Tourism is a pretty strong economic indicator here in Maine. It's been down for the last few years. This year however, reservations, bookings and projections are up - pretty substantially. I blame Obama.

In other vacation news, my summer trip will only be my bi-annual trip out to Minnesota and Wisconsin to visit my Dad, my sisters, etc. My daughter's riding with me.

What are your vacation plans?

I like the way Minnesotans say Minnesota.

Also perhaps I shall be going to Visit family in Cork this summer. However, that depends on how quickly I recover from my upcoming surgery. I'm getting a bionic hand.

There's a twenty-four hour gym with an Olympic sized pool around here, so probably going to spend time there and start teaching the little one how to swim before the patio/endless pool combo is finished.

We have a long July weekend planned for Michigan along the lake. Rented a house since hotel stays with the baby are always touch-and-go and we thought a house would give us more room, a quiet place for him to sleep and less concern for the neighbors if he starts acting like an upset 19 month old.

Since I switched jobs, I only have a week worth of vacation for the first year and want to save a couple days for the Christmas holiday so that's about it for extended plans.

E3 (Los Angeles) and the wedding (Hawaii) make up my de facto vacations this year. Though I've taken a couple Fridays off to go to our friends beach house in Margate, NJ.

My family used to vacation in Ogunquit, Maine every summer. Beautiful place. Pity the water was frigid, but I suppose that also kept it from getting too crowded.

I have to have re-surgery at some point this summer and will be out of commission for about 10 days total, so that is going to effectively be my staycation. I call it re-surgery because I had this surgery last year and didn't give it enough time to heal and now I have to have the surgery again. Yay me!

I have no plans. Summer is the busiest time of year for us, so I'll be too busy otherwise. Maybe an extended weekend here or there. Likely bring the family along on some work road trips.

We got into the habit in years past of taking three-day weekends here and there when able as opposed to week-long holidays and it's worked out pretty well. I like having more frequent trips to look forward to, even if they are shorter.

Eske, where in Hawaii are you getting hitched?

Since we moved out here and I started this job in March, I don't have any vacation time. I'm taking two unpaid weeks over Christmas to go home and see the fam. My new job is sending me to Honolulu to take a non-profit accounting seminar, but I'll literally be flying in, sitting in a hotel conference room for 8 hours with a small lunch break, then flying home. :( I wish I could have more time out there but we can't really afford it right now.

Oahu. The fiancee seems to have her heart set on the Turtle Bay Resort (it's that one from Forgetting Sarah Marshall).

Plan to avoid the beaches a week after full moons. Not a very good time to go for a swim.

No plans for "vacation," but a few trips. If I get lucky I'll be going to E3 in LA next week for ZAM. In September my best friend is getting married in MA and I get to be the best man. Other than those two there are tentative trips to head down to Key West with some friends later this summer.

I have some very vague plans for something bigger. I usually take a week-long vacation during the summer to visit MA and my old high school friends and family; but most people have moved away, so I'm debating renting a cottage on the Gulf coast side of FL (have a family member who is a realtor on Ana Maria Island). But my lease is up August 1st, so I need to find somewhere new to live... and itching at the back of my mind is finding a new job as well. I might up and leave Gainesville, but I need to find employment first, which would ***** with my vacation time. At my current job I have like 5 weeks of vacation I haven't had a chance to use, so... I also have an idea that it would be great to find a new job, tell them I can't start until mid-August, line up an apartment, and then spend some weeks traveling Europe. I have several thousand bucks set aside for something big, and that would be a blast.

Basically I need to sit down, figure my sh*t out, and then make some decisions. But usually when I sit down I tend to play games >_> Damn you, lack of self-restraint!

Could be! I'm waiting for two pieces to fall into place: namely, that we have it in the budget, and that my 9-5 lets me take off the time. Our audit starts that week >_>

Are you registered already? Or is registration that late not a problem somehow?

I honestly have zero details. It's late enough that at this point I don't think it likely that I'll be going Smiley: glare

My daughter wants to go on a segway tour of Minneapolis. If you see a couple crazy women on motorized sticks heading your way - run like hell.

My family used to vacation in Ogunquit, Maine every summer. Beautiful place. Pity the water was frigid, but I suppose that also kept it from getting too crowded.

I can tell you haven't been recently. We're there fairly often. It actually is frequently crowded these days. With gay men. Not sure when that evolution took place, but it's fairly well ensconced as Provincetown North these days. Have no fear, though, OOB is still the prime location to see hairy Quebecois men in speedos, along with their very large and crunchy haired women.

Ah, yeah last I was there was over 10 years ago, but you could see the beginnings of that trend. Hell, now that I think about it, it's probably the reason my parents stopped taking us. Smiley: rolleyes

OOB will be unrecognizable if you've not been there in a couple years. Many of the old beach hotels and shops burned. A new set of condos was built right in front of the pier. The batting cages are gone, but the amusement park is still there. And while you can still overhear the funny-french canadian speak all up and down the beach, there is nary a speedo to be seen.
