95% of the cost of a fast food Coke is the cup. There's a reason why McDonalds will sell you any size soft drink for a buck. It sounds like a great bargain and then McD's still makes ninety-five cents profit on it and deflects the lower margins on the dollar sandwiches.

Yeah, cups are shockingly expensive. The smallest Styrofoam cups I used at an old job in an ice cream parlor cost 17c each.

Franchised stores don't pay nearly so much, of course. Even though their cups are designed, they are produced in massive bulk and the store owners buy them from the corporation. They are dirt cheap compared to what a small business would need to pay.

That and the McD's cups are waxed paper.

Except the sweet tea cups which are some weird styrene material. Not quite regular styrofoam but... anyway, I'm not sure what makes sweet tea so special to deserve them but if McD's is sending the extra cash on them, their tea must react with wax to become a toxic poison or something.

I don't know how it was elsewhere, but around here they were pulling out all the stops for their Sweet Tea advertising. I'm guessing it was really just tied to that.

Do you have to use a Minne-soh-tah accent? I generally have a good ear for accents, and I recognise that one from the way Richard Dean Anderson talks and junk.

To be fair though, it's not unheard of for store and restaurant owners to adjust the brixer to "water down" the drinks so as to squeeze more drinks out of that box of syrup. Never underestimate the silliness of some people trying to make an extra buck. But usually if the drink tastes different or watered down, it's just because the thing isn't quite adjusted right and no one's gotten around to fixing it yet.

I'm sure that happens, but it's also ignoring the more significant issue at work. Gravity is what creates the pressure that actually causes the syrup to come out of the machine. When the bag is full, the weight on the lower fluid is much higher, causing it to emit more for each "spurt."

As the bag empties, that pressure diminishes. The result is that drinks made from a full bag are far more concentrated than those made as the bag is finishing out.

Do some people adjust them to hold out on syrup? Probably. But that's a strong minority of store owners.

Every place that uses soda fountains is going to encounter this issue, however. It's perfectly normal. It averages out to the right concentration, but it's a bell curve.

[EDIT]

There are also bags that are connected to pumps, instead of using gravity. But the same pressure differences affect concentration. It's not as extreme as machines using gravity alone, but it's definitely still a noticeable difference.

I'm always told I belong in the 40s and 50s. Classier time and great music. Absolutely my favorite era. Sure, there were a lot of problems, but I'm white, male, and native to the Northeast so most of it wouldn't directly affect me, heh. Okay, I'd have probably had to go to WWII, but besides that.

I could have been Captain America ...

Sidetrack aside, I wasn't sure what the actual name of the machine was, truth be told, so I went with the best term I could think of for it.

Well the assumption was that the vendor was out to make a profit. Besides, that's why soda on tap is heavily diluted. If it weren't, you probably wouldn't ever make a profit.
It's not diluted down, it's a completely different product.

If you notice a difference between fountain pop at McDonalds vs Burger King, then that's likely a diluted product.

I worked at McDonalds for 5ish years, I kinda know how it works. I was the one who had to carry the syrup from the truck to the walk in and back for refill. Get over yourself.

lolGaxe wrote:
Sorry, I've been laughing so hard my eyes are tearing and I made a mistake. You actually break even if you sell each for a little more than a PENNY each. A nickle you're still making profit.

You're such a tool. I gave my $.05 in support of a comment that YOU said. Even if I'm somehow wrong, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the argument at hand. Just in case you forgot, my point is that there is a difference between mismanaging money and not needing it. Where, someone who needs money, (i.e. a bum) might need it, but spends it on something that s/he doesn't need (i.e. beer). Just because that individual wasted money on something that wasn't necessary, it doesn't mean that the s/he doesn't need it.

So, unless your "point" with the soda comment somehow contradicts that statement, then I have no interest in playing your lame game.

You do realize that you get the same amount of soda in a small (without ice) as you do as a large (with ice).. They only "lose" ice.

Also, that "buck" deal isn't everywhere.

That was only part of my job. The ONLY point that I was making was that was coke on tap is diluted and being so is cheaper. Unless, you're arguing against that then politely STFU.

Are we playing the "you do realize" game?

You DO REALIZE that they give out those cups for self-service and you can always ask for no/little ice, RIGHT? Or, for that matter, you can get a large coffee for the same price as a small coffee which has zero ice in it... you DO REALIZE that, RIGHT??

Your experience working fast food isn't exactly unique.
