My biggest disappointment was that the Scouring of the Shire wasn't in the movies.

I suspect they're going to have to expand the role of all the dwarves to make having 12 of them in the movie make more sense. I never really understood why there were 12 of them anyway, to be honest. Most of them never did anything notable, and Tolkien often did stuff like "they said" rather than give out individual lines.

I suppose he liked the idea that 13 is a lucky number for the dwarves?

This, specifically. Thorin states it in the beginning, I believe.

It's either Thorin or Gandalf, I can't remember which. Probably Thorin, though if you remember it that way.

I need to dig out my copy...

No.

After the dwarves and Gandalf escape the goblin caves and before Bildo reappears, the dwarves suggest leaving Bilbo rather than trying to go back and save him.

Gandalf admonishes them and then says "If you don't save him, you can go back to being thirteen and have all the bad luck you want".

ETA: Later, whilst talking to Smaug one of the titles Bilbo gives himself is "Lucky Number".

That number being 14.

He's blind?

I was always confused on the number of the group, since I never knew if they counted Gandalf, since he was often away getting captured by Sauron and the like. And it has been years since I read it, after all. I need to go find a copy and start reading to Thom.

Blind in one, fuzzy in the other.

Ah. I'm getting that way too. I get iritis and during the latest flare-up (over the past two weeks) I developed a cataract in my left eye, which is now like looking through wax paper.

Iritis was my initial diagnosis, too. AGGRESSIVELY pursue treatment as the resultant internal bleeding is the max factor for my blindness in that eye.

On a side note, universal health care would have prevented this, but who cares, amirite? (gbaji)?

It's a cyclical thing, associated with ankylosing spondylitis. Roughly every two years or so everything starts to flare up, over the course of a few months: the eye, the vertebrae in my mid back (causing immobility of the ribcase) and lower back (inflexibility of the torso), sacroiliac joints, hips 9causing sciatica), knees, even causing some nasty 'roids. I've had some pretty scary episodes before when I wanted to claw my own eyeball out, but this time it clouded over and just didn't go away.

Preexisting condition. You were born with eyes.
