Yes, absolutely, by definition.
Being "the best we can be" by definition is the best a person is capable of at any given time, assisted or not. If you are putting all of your effort into something you are already being the best you can be, assistance could make your best better sure but then it's not "the best we can be" it's "the best us and something/someone else can be".
As a side note I love it when people say things like "God helps those who help themselves", cause you know when I quit smoking God was totally the reason my health improved and my bank account got a little fatter. Not to knock people's beliefs (ok, maybe a little) I just find it interesting the things some people attribute to their chosen deity.
