God damn it gbaji stop replying to other threads and tell me what rights you have as a US citizen that I do not as a Brit.

Surely you don't think there aren't any, right? I hope that's not the point of the exercise. The restrictions on speech alone in the UK relative to the US would take a while to articulate.

Don't think they have Miranda rights (or similar of course) in the UK either. Or was that just France? My understanding is that most of Europe doesn't provide the same rights to those accused or suspected of a crime as we do in the US. Was that actually a serious question? Guess I should stop working and run directly to that other thread then!

Oh for two. They both have equivalents.

The UK has a right to silence, yes. As well as due process, an attorney, jury by peers, against cruel and unusual punishment, against unlawful search and seizure without evidence, etc.

They also have the Right to Education, which we lack--it falls to the parents to provide for a child's education. If a child gets kicked out, then it's on the parent to get them education. And the laws guaranteeing education for special needs children are far from awesome in the US. We also have failed to provide easy access to higher education, especially with regards to minority groups.

They have the Right of Gender Recognition, which we lack. Transsexual peoples are able to amend their birth certificates and marry the opposite gender (which won't matter soon, since they are quickly moving towards allowing for same-sex marriages). It is also important to note that the UK doesn't demand that your sexual organs match your legal gender.

There's also the Right to Housing, which we lack completely. This is the hardest for them to enforce, but it does give legal recourse to people who find themselves homeless, especially if they are a priority candidate.

Ok. Fair enough. No right to bear arms though. Less rights regarding free speech, privacy, property, etc. I honestly don't feel like going through every minute detail of the respective laws, doubly so on a semi-strawman aspect of the issue. I was speaking more directly of infringements on liberty via property confiscation (taxes), and the much more accepted practice of redistribution of the fruits of the people's labors in the UK compared to the US.

None of those are rights. Or, more correctly, they are not rights when the involve the state giving you something. They are rights if we're talking about preventing the state (or another person) from taking those things away.

The right to bear arms is looked upon as a curse, not a freedom by most western nations.

What's funny is that they DO have the right to bare arms. I only listed rights specifically with regards to the accused.

And gbaji, stop being @#%^ing stupid. No one gives a crap about what you define "rights" as. The rest of us are going to work with the actual definition of the word.

And your definition is not only wrong, it's just dumb. What exactly is a right against illegal seizure if not a right protecting you from having the gov't take?

I'm not going to play your game.

Idiggory, you just don't get it. The only thing that matters here is how the UK taxes people more and that's all sorts of wrong and especially when that money gets spent on horrible things like keeping the people living in the UK healthy, educated and not homeless.

So basically, your whole definition of freedom rests solely on appropriation of funds from taxes? I thought you said it wasn't about money, gbaji?

edit: Firearms. Unless what you're getting at is we can't use guns where there are likely to be a shitload of other people. Seems like the right law, to me.

Was gonna respond with a thing about canned pumpkin, but my relief is here and I need to get going. Will edit this when I get home, but needed a reminder.

Edit: For the cake thing, try this with a few drops of mint extract. It won't taste quite like scratch, but it'll be tasty.

Why edit when you can just +1? Edits are only acceptable when you have inadvertently made yourself look foolish.

I like to make beef stew in the crock pot. Also, "baked" beans. Also also, pulled pork (I don't have a smoker).

I don't really feel like going to the store, and don't have what I'd need to make it. I do have some chili from my last batch frozen, though. But having a slow cooker warming/scenting my apartment sounds really good right now.

I might make a chick pea curry or something... Or maybe just a tomato sauce and I'll make ravioli tonight. Hmmmm...

Falafel is delicious too. Though I suppose it's kinda like fried hummus.

And I think I will go for the sauce.

I don't have a garden (or a yard, lol), so my basil plant was protected by the walls of my apartment. :P But I don't have enough room for too many plants, so I only have one. Depending on what I'm making, I'll use various combinations of dried/fresh.
