I get that a store has to have permission to rent a game out. I have no idea what that has to do with not profiting off someone else work.
Context? Silly me, I assumed that since my previous sentence had mentioned needing permission to rent out a game, that I didn't need to repeat "without the proper permission/licensing/whatever". I really ought to learn to never underestimate the ability of forum posters here to take a sentence in the middle of a paragraph full of context in the one way which ignores that context entirely and then make that the central part of their response.
As I responded earlier in this thread, I thought about adding in an extra phrase to clarify that I meant "without permission", but thought that was silly because no reasonable person should leap to the assumption that I meant "at all, period, no exceptions, even though that makes no freaking sense at all". Then I remembered what forum I was posting on, considered changing it. Then decided to go home and make lasagna instead.
You guys are consistent at least. Did you really think I meant that no one can ever under any circumstances use another persons work? Didn't it occur to you that this make no sense, and then perhaps look for a more rational meaning, like say in the preceding sentence? I guess it's just funny to me, because when I read something which isn't specifically qualified, I look for the most reasonable interpretation of what was written. But some people seem to automatically leap to the least reasonable interpretation, assume that's what the writer meant, and then respond to it (and often refuse to accept a clarification, calling it "backpedaling"). Funny, but predictable I guess!
