Quote:
President Barack Obama brought students, parents and experts together at the White House in March to try to confront "cyberbullying." The Education Department sponsors an annual conference to help schools deal with it. Teen suicides linked to vicious online bullying have caused increasing worry in communities across the country.
Conduct that rises to the point of bullying is hard to define, but the AP-MTV poll of youth ages 14 to 24 showed plenty of rotten behavior online, and a perception that it's increasing. The share of young people who frequently see people being mean to each other on social networking sites jumped to 55 percent, from 45 percent in 2009.
That may be partly because young people are spending more time than ever communicating electronically: 7 in 10 had logged into a social networking site in the previous week, and 8 in 10 had texted a friend.
"The Internet is an awesome resource," says Devine, "but sometimes it can be really negative and make things so much worse."
And computers and cellphones increase the reach of old-fashioned bullying.
"When I was bullied in middle school I could go home and slam my door and forget about it for a while," said Hinduja. "These kids can be accessed around the clock through technology. There's really no escape."
Are we born bad and we trying to be good, or are we born good, and we acquire badness by the people we grow up with?

Given the fact that small children are sociopathic little shits, I'm fairly sure empathy is a learned behavior. At the very least, we're not actually born "good."

It's not like your scenarios are mutually exclusive, anyway. In any case, go back to freshman philosophy.

To be fair, this particular forum tends to take cyberbullies and break them down over time...

My daughter has gotten into her mind that the proper way to wake daddy up on Saturdays to watch cartoons with is to launch herself off the headboard of the bed into his stomach, so I'm leaning towards bad trying to be good.

I hear he gives out mad hugglez.

On topic, I read some blurb in the Metro today about Lady Gaga trying to push for bullying to be a hate crime. If she wasn't already on my celebrity hate list for that weird-*** guido impression, she sure is now.

I blame Asperger's for the majority of cyberbullying.

If it wasn't for the 'spergs taking the internet too seriously, there would be no one to troll.

Varrus is a good example of this.

Honestly, I think some people need to grow thicker skins. I don't really call it bullying unless you're actually getting beaten up, your lunch money stolen, etc. You know, *real* bullying? People are ***** online because they know they can get away with it. As soon as other people realize that, the whole "bullying" label seems rather ridiculous.

If someone is actually driven to suicide based on some words on a screen, as far as I'm concerned that's Darwinism at work.

Really - good or evil?

I think peeps are pretty much empty slates when they're born, but programmed for survival.

I hate the texture of oatmeal. I should try adding some pecans for something to make edible to me. I never even considered jazzing it up to make it taste (or in my case texturize) better. I just force myself to eat it for the healthyness.

Have you ever tried steel oats? They take longer to cook, but they're not so pasty and blech.

Yeah, but it takes awhile on low power (unless you have a big container that won't let them bubble over i suppose) and I've never gotten them it quite as soft in the microwave.

When I make them at home I have a little mini-crockpot I cook them in overnight.

It can be done in crock pot? Can I buy this in a grocery store? A normal one? If not, where?
