Iowa has done this since I was a little kid. Here is applies to any clothing under $150. I think it might apply to school supplies as well. My boss said something about electronics also under $150, but I'm not 100% sure on that one. This year, it was actually a two-day holiday. There was news about the holiday before the weekend, but nothing caused news during or after.

My Aunt mentioned something about a Tax Free weekend in Tenn. last week. But apparently it's something that happens every year before the school starts up.

Well, with such a strong argument supporting that statement, you must be right!

Your government can't pay for itself as it is. The answer is not to tax less. It's either spend less and tax the same, or spend the same and tax more.

These are the only reasonable solutions.

Just for the record, the UK tried the "cut everything" route, hasn't worked out so well for us.

But not raising taxes, when compared to raising taxes is "taxing less", right? I get that you're responding directly to Varus and the whole tax holiday thing, but your statement can also be taken as an attack on those who are merely opposed to raising taxes as a solution to our current economic woes. It's also broad enough to be taken as an attack on the general position of "taxing less", which is generally a much longer term argument.

Increased spending tends to lead to more increased spending. The "in for a penny" factor comes into play. You create new programs and those programs grow, increasing the total rate of spending increase over time. Whatever precise effects occur, it's a pretty easy trend to see. Similarly, when you start cutting programs (especially if you can actually eliminate them entirely), the shrinking spending effect tends to increase over time. The argument for taxing less is that if you can cut those taxes, and then learn to live within the means which result, it becomes progressively easier to continue to cut off those government programs. People realize that they don't really need that stuff after all. Then they realize that a bunch of stuff they're paying for isn't really needed.

Heaven forbid we work towards that goal. It would be a disaster, right? ;)

Yeah, because that's been the driving principle behind government spending for the last 30 years.

Yes, we have one every year before school here in TN. It's for clothes, school supplies and computers. So I'm not sure why varus is talking about this happening in another state.

Maybe the answer is to reduce taxation/spending on the federal level and transfer all non-Constitutionally-required spending to the state/local level, which would allow voting residents of each state more direct control over their tax dollars.

A man can dream....

He'd have to be from Tennessee to know about it.

(Reuters) - Arkansans shopped until they dropped on Saturday, braving temperatures deep into the triple-digits to take advantage of the state's first sales tax holiday weekend.

"I have never seen anything like this," said Clancy Graham, a manager at Little Rock's RK Collections Boutique, an independently owned store. "If we could do this three times a year, it would be amazing. It has done crazy good stuff for our business."

The same thing would happen on a national scale if taxes were reduced.

If only we could all live like 'Arkansans'. I find it difficult to imagine a better state to emulate.
