(Reuters) - Arkansans shopped until they dropped on Saturday, braving temperatures deep into the triple-digits to take advantage of the state's first sales tax holiday weekend.

"I have never seen anything like this," said Clancy Graham, a manager at Little Rock's RK Collections Boutique, an independently owned store. "If we could do this three times a year, it would be amazing. It has done crazy good stuff for our business."

The same thing would happen on a national scale if taxes were reduced.

We'd buy more gasoline, cigarettes and booze? What else has a federal sales tax?

Smiley: rolleyes You honestly believe that? I lived in a state (Delaware) with no sales tax. There was absolutely no difference. The reason tax free holidays work is that they are a good chance for someone to get big-ticket items without having to travel to a different state to do so. If it happened all the time, there would be no more incentive to pick up an item on any given day.

Besides, the federal government imposes no sales tax* either. It's a state-by-state basis, so making it "on a national scale" would require forcing the 45 states with sales tax to do so. Won't happen.

*Edit: On most items

Reducing taxes on one day will certainly cause some to buy stuff they might not otherwise have bought. More-so though it will just cause everyone to buy the stuff they weren't going to otherwise buy next Saturday on 'tax-free' day.

It's a good way to encourage shopping though (america's second favorite past time!). It's kinda like Black Friday.

If it could be coordinated with NV's tax-free day, hookers can come to the party too.

Well if they can't afford to buy gasoline then they obviously aren't pulling their own weight in the economy and should be euthanized.

The other problem is that federal gasoline taxes go into the federal fund for roadway repairs and improvements.

Illinois had a "back to school" tax holiday on school supplies last year which they decided not to do again this year. The stimulative effect apparently wasn't worth the $60ish million in lost tax revenues.

Locked,

That's right. I used it as a clear cut example of how reducing taxes stimulates the economy. And you still havn't addressed this other than the simply claiming it won't work.
Sure I did. Read my earlier post: a tax free day "works" because it's like a day with a sale. If there's a sale every day, it makes no difference to shoppers.

So now that we established that reducing taxes stimulates the economy, be it local or federal,

Right, and if businesses had sales all the time, their business would go up as the customers flock in to take advantage of the savings. Ask the car dealers and mattress salesmen how that's working out.

So now a few equals every day. God you suck at reading. You should ask for a refund from barry.

I graduated before Obama ever took office, quick one Smiley: tongue Your first post also said we should reduce taxes, not have sporadic tax free holidays, so no, I think my reading is perfectly fine, thanks!

I would be interested in seeing the research on what economists have to say. Got some? I figure your talking point must have come from some CNS article or somesuch.

Look on the bright side, you're getting back the millions of dollars Canadians steal under the table from you guys every year, because your dollar is so crappy and your gas is so cheap, as there's few vacationing in Canada itself this year.
