Texas police arrested a U.S. soldier who went AWOL this month after being charged with possessing child pornography, a Defense Department official told CNN Thursday.

Pfc. Naser Abdo was assigned to Fort Campbell in Kentucky but was arrested in Killeen, Texas, near Fort Hood, the military base where a 2009 shooting spree left 13 people dead and 32 others wounded.

Killeen police received a call from a gun shop owner about a suspicious man in the store who was asking questions about 40-caliber ammunition and then bought three boxes of 12-gauge ammunition and a magazine for a pistol, the defense official said. He paid cash and left in a cab. He then went to a surplus store and allegedly bought a military uniform.

FBI agents searching the soldier's hotel room found gunpowder, shotgun shells, a pressure cooker, 18 pounds of sugar, four magazines and ammunition, the defense official said. The FBI is investigating the case.

Abdo had put in the paperwork to be discharged as a conscientious objector at Fort Campbell. The Army approved his request, but he was then charged with child pornography and went AWOL, the official said.

Some other details...

In an update to its original story, Fox names the suspect asPft. Nasser Jason Abdo, and says he was allegedly found with “explosives and jihadist materials:”

Pvt. Nasser Jason Abdo, an AWOL soldier from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, was arrested by the Killeen Police Department near Fort Hood and remains in custody there. Authorities, however, will not say if Abdo is the one who raised security concerns.

Abdo was allegedly found with explosives and jihadist materials at the time of his arrest, a senior Army source confirms to Fox News. He was arrested Wednesday afternoon after someone called authorities to report a suspicious individual.

Note that clicked on the Fox News link from The Blaze article doesn't actually contain those words. If they were taken down or not remains unclear.

I think him going out and buying a uniform is the oddest bit.

So was this guy a radical right wing nutjob acting on his own or a radical muslim that's been financed by the radical imams in the ME?

So what do you make with a pressure cooker and 80 pounds of sugar?

Mixing potassium chlorate nitrate, sugar, and baking powder can make one wicked smoke bomb.

Edit: Been a while.

There's a few more nefarious things, yeah? 80 pounds is quite a lot for a smoke bomb, and you can buy them ready made at Army/Navy surplus stores.

You can make gunpowder, too, but I kind of discounted that considering they found gunpowder along with the pressure cooker and sugar.

Now that I think about it, you could probably use the sugar to make a propellant. Then again, there is a shit ton of things you can use as propellants.

Ok, so this guy actually did have ballistic rocket making materials. But based on the numbers and types it was the wrong types. The sugar based propellants make a solid base of a non-weaponized rocket ( I've mixed a batch of what he had the materials for, assuming he was in the process of acquiring saltpeter) but it makes a really crappy bomb or explosive yield. I mean you could fabricate a crude rpg launcher, but rocket based weapons are all about having a guidance system, which if he was making the wrong chemical explosive, I have my doubts about his competence on that front.

Guns are easy to use though.

Even if he was looking for bizarre 40cal rounds. I kinda think he was planning to use the to tip the rocket cores with them. You could throw those, so you wouldn't have to build fins and angle correction. It would be kind of like an exploding rocket spear.

From what I have read/heard, it doesn't seem like he had the knowledge to pull anything off and that he was more than likely a pawn.

I'm sure you can expect your call from the FBI shortly. Smiley: tongue

Guidance systems is pointless if he was just making a simple mortar. In-country they tend to just mount a metal pipe to the back of a motorcycle, ride it just out of range of rifles (usually out of range) and launch simple explosives into bases, driving away before the smoke even clears.

What, to consult? I have all the right papers and nothing on my record. Not even a speeding ticket.

The point is the ingredients are screwy for that goal.

Which supports the theory that the guy didn't know what he was doing. It was said that he had to buy some ACU's. That clearly demonstrates that he didn't think that far ahead as he already had some from where he came.

Well, it's better that than the situational incest which regrettably spawned you.
