Old people like alcohol, right? Right. I'll be 21 soon, so I thought what I'd do was have my first alcoholic drink ever be something I'd made myself. Not beer, largely due to time constraints and equipment needed, as well as its relatively dull nature and low alcohol content. The aim will largely be not to go blind, and avoid contaminates. Generally to make a decent quality product. And hey, we can even do it together! Aren't you excited?
Right then, the two recipes I'm familiar with are met/chouchet and kilju. The first being some French/German which includes a lot of honey, which sounds disgusting. Given that, I've decided to go with kilju. Sugar, yeast, water. Simple as.
I figure I'll use an empty vodka bottle as the container, but I'm not really sure how to vent the C02 or whatever without risking contamination. I suppose soaking the equipment in boiling water for a while should be enough to sterilize it, yeah?

There are specialty brewing stores that sell commercial-grade sanitizers. I'd highly recommend using those, as boiling water isn't enough to ensure that your yeast doesn't spoil.

I've never attempted anything but beer and wine, and I have never succeeded at a high level at either of those (read: never produced anything worth sharing). My wine is getting better, but I think that I will hit a ceiling sooner, rather than later, due to the shipping of the juice.
This is actually the first post I've read by you that doesn't make me want to take hot pokers to my eyes.
So, almost happy birthday, I guess? No advice on the home brewing; pretty sure I have some friends who do some, but really I think my closest personal experience is grandpa's old bathtub moonshine. I heard it had a kick to it.

Would a few vigorous washing with bleach and the like be sufficient?

I prefer to let experts handle my alcohol, honestly. I am lucky enough to live close to wineries and a few full scale breweries that I can get the "brewing" experience without doing it myself.

I never drank until I was 20, and even then I drank down in Mexico (where the legal age is 18). There's a pretty decent minority of people who don't drink until it's legal.

I've made some wine. For about a $1.39 you can buy a little plastic bubbler airlock. I use gallon jugs. The airlock fits into the stopper.

You wanna sanitize stuff good, but if you're not planning on a long aging process you have less chance of bacteria or other foul stuff taking over. Boiling everything should be fine.
