It's Friday. Ain't got no job; ain't got **** to do. I'm gonna get you high.

This weekend I am continuing to look for apartments, which just got a bit more urgent as I'm going to be out of the country for two weeks in the middle of August, and my lease is up Sept 6.

I'm also starting to seriously look for another job, as my company announced earlier this week that we're being acquired by another firm, and they'd seek to "eliminate redundancies" in the corporate office, where I work.

Never saw it. Sometimes I think "It's only 11 episodes or so; I should run through it" but... eh. Hasn't happened yet.

I'm working a gig tomorrow afternoon. Other than that I plan on staying indoors as much as possible.

It took me a while to get into it, and I was hesitant about the recommendations, but I was quite happy after I did. Unfortunately there's no reason to rush, as it's not as if there will be a proper continuation, but if you should find yourself with nothing to do then it's definitely worth it.

Seeing as how it's dangerously hot out, I'll be staying indoors as much as possible this weekend. I may go see Captain America, but aside from that nothing interesting will be happening.

Packing packing packing. I move out next Friday (Jesus, is it really only a week away!?) and I haven't done ANYTHING yet besides get some empty boxes and clean the shower. I'll be packing up everything but my furniture, computer, and a week's worth of clothing, and storing it at my parents' place in Ocala. I still need to figure out how I'm going to transport my bed and futon; hoping to get a friend with a truck to help out.

Then comes the cleaning spree. Oy vey. This weekend is going to SUCK.

Edit: Oh, but that all starts tomorrow. Tonight I'm going to my friend's final show in Gainesville before he moves to DC. Should be a good time; he's a good musician, as are some of the others performing there, and there's a comedy act too. Looking forward to that, although it bites that he's leaving.

Oh, here's one of his videos. A big crowd-pleaser here in Gainesville. Sounds a bit better with some backup, but he's not bad.

I'm going to be home for the first weekend in 5 weeks, so my plan is to mostly relax and fix a few things around the house that have languished in my absence. I'm also going to smoke a bunch of ribs and a duck. Should be fun.

I think it's the Whedon fanboiizm. I was never interested in Buffy or Angel or whatever so the recommendations of people who think everything he does is blessed don't exactly inspire me. Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog was amusing as a one-shot, but that's about it.

We were gonna go watch Yogi Bear on the 40 foot movie screen they were putting up at the town commons for festival. I'd been kind of excited to sit in my lawn chair on the banks of the river and watch a movie. But I had my weekends messed up. No Yogi til next Friday.

This weekend I plan to test out the air-conditioners of many models of new little cars. If the heat/humidity breaks a bit I'm going blueberry picking.

My garden produce is coming in hot and heavy. I ate my first Cuke from it last night. I'm overflowing with parsley, basil and lettuce. I need to find some good recipes to use it all up.

I'd enjoyed firefly, and didn't ever really get into buffy or angel. I think I just liked the space cowboys thing.

Firefly was pretty good. I watched it quite awhile ago but recall thinking a couple of the actors were kinda lame. I think it was hyped up more than necessary.

The first time I saw Firefly/Serenity was after a friend aquired the whole series and the movie. We sat and watched them all over the weekend. This is the preferred viewing method, IMO. I had no previous Whedon exposure, so maybe that was a plus.

I freakin' love it.

ALSO: A fellow staffer is on vacation, so I'm working a bunch of shifts. 8 on, 8 off, 8 on, 12 off, 12 on.

My husband and I saw Serenity in the theater. I wasn't very excited about it, but he wanted to see it so we went.

I fell in love with it.

Then I found out it was based on a series, and we watched the first few at a friends house. I was hooked, and I purchased the whole series to watch at home.

Then I found out that it was Joss Whedon, who I had never heard of. I loved the original Buffy movie when I was a kid, so for years I rejected the whole idea of the Buffy series. Everyone who recommended it to me said, "Don't worry, it's nothing like the movie." That was the wrong way to recommend it to me, let me tell ya. Once I realized that Buffy was done by Joss, I said, "Hm, I'll give it a shot." I loved it. Then I realized that he had done the first movie, too, and I officially became a Joss Whedon fangirl.

I watched Dollhouse, and I wanted to love it, I did. But I just couldn't love it. In all honesty, it just wasn't that good.

I haven't watched Angel yet, though I want to.

Thats what I did a few months ago. Just blew through the whole thing on Netflix over a week or so.

I had watched Serenity first. Rented that movie with low expectations (and no knowledge that the series even existed) and found it to be a pleasant surprise. Solid, if unspectacular, sci-fi western stuff. I think it works on an Indiana Jones-y kind of level. The higher production values helped elevate it above the series, which seemed to suffer badly from an insufficient budget.

The series itself I found to be a mixed bag. There are a couple really good episodes (I recall "Out of Gas" being particularly good). The series handles its "sci-fi" better than it incorporates its "western" elements, which are lifted a little too literally. Explanation is given for why some parts of space culture have devolved into a version of the wild west, but I'd have liked to have seen those elements touched up with details that showed how the west mixes with the futuristic aspects. Instead, sometimes the crew will land on a remote planet and things just go "western mode", where everything is a verbatim port of the wild west.

Cowboy Bebop handled the same subject matter, but developed it in a way that made it seem much more natural. Western elements were never so far removed from the futuristic aspects that they felt like they were in another show entirely, as is often the case in Firefly.

What drove me really crazy? Everyone uses western six-shooter revolvers, which inexplicably make laser noises. Sweet jesus I hated that.

My love of Serenity and Firefly had a lot more to do with the characters and their interactions. I just really loved all of the characters.

I also always felt like Wash was sort of the one who made no sense to have around. He's the pilot, potentially the most important guy on the crew, but he's always sort of overlooked. Jane is my favorite character, and who I consider the funniest, but Wash has some awesome lines.

Yeah, I think the best parts were definitely the characters and plots. Whedon does dialogue and atmosphere much better than action. The bounty hunter in the final episode, Early, was pretty brilliant in my opinion.

It'll be interesting to see how he handles the Avengers movie.

Early was very good, but I really loved Chiwetel Ejiofor as the assassin in Serenity. Great casting and strong writing helped make that role really pop.

Didn't know Whedon was doing the Avengers movie. Interesting. I wish they'd boot that guy who did Limitless from the Uncharted movie and stick Whedon on it.

Ray's dad is coming to visit the second week of August so now my butt is in gear to get the house organized, streamlined and decluttered ONCE AGAIN for his visit. I'm working on my to-do list for everything tonight after grocery shopping and then the next 16 days are nothing but checking that to-do list off.

Firefly and Serenity are favorites of mine. If they're on TV, I stop whatever I'm doing and watch. Love Jane, he's great. I wish that actor would make an appearance on Castle.

You might want to adjust your audio.Smiley: dubious

Some of the weapons look like gunpowder projectile weapons but aren't (I'm looking at you, Vera). Aside from that I recall all the six-shooters going bang, bang.

OH YOU WILL NOT LECTURE ME ON WHAT THE GUNS LOOK LIKE.

Seriously though, I'm pretty positive that they do, in fact, make laser sounds. Now, let me adjust that to saying that I only noticed it in one episode: the one where they're delivering livestock, and get attacked. That's one of the larger gunfights, though. I think I even paused and rewound it a few times to confirm that they were magnum revolvers (without any futuristic attachments) that went pew-pew.
