If you buy a Nook, one of the perks B&N bestows upon you is one-hour per day of free Nook reading at their store (and hooked into B&N's wifi). You can read anything at all that is in their inventory. I tried it out today.
I was on my lunch break so couldn't read the full hour, but I read War by Sebastian Junger for about twenty-five minutes. Then bookmarked my spot. Supposedly that bookmark should stay and I can go back any day and pick up where I left off.
It was pretty easy to find the book I wanted to read and took only moments to load it up to my device. I found a comfy chair that wasn't in the coffee shop and got pretty darn immersed in the story...til I noticed the time. It was pretty cool.
It's a good 15min drive for me from the office to Barnes and Noble and nearly a half-hour drive from home, so not terribly useful for me atm. If someone however has a B&N in their backyard this could be quite a boon.

If this worked outside of B&N this would be useful and a good marketing tool, maybe tune the numbers to ~30m.

Since I'm on a roll. There's a little program called Calibre that easily converts between most any ebook format. I've gotten most of my stuff free in pdf and converted it to epub.

I debated on a Nook vs. a Kindle, ended up going with the Kindle. I avoided getting an e-reader for quite a while due to my objections to proprietary limitations and the fact that you aren't really buying a book, you're buying a way to read it.
That said, the technology is definitely the wave of the future, and once it settles into something more realistic, it will likely be how everyone accesses books.

Some people are like slinkies, they aren't really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.
Check out your public library for e-books on loan. When I get a e-reader, I'll be checking out e-books without having to load a bag with physical books.
