I can't. I'm either incapable or too petty to.

The texting thing is just a symptom of your larger inability to be aware of what happens around you.
Your inability to ignore does not mean I'm unaware. It means I can ignore and you can't. Can you really argue this when you can't let the inanity of gbaji or varus post without replying?
Bad example. Alma.

Damn. Beat me to it.

So yeah, I can ignore and even appreciate otherwise annoying people here, but this is a place of discourse. A theater is a place of shut the fuck up and pay attention. Most emotions occur relative to the individual's expectations. e.g., people have the reasonable expectation to watch the movie quietly, but the expectation is violated, yielding either a fight, flight, or resign response. Most people will either resign themselves or choose the simplest fight response (glaring/shushing).

True, I was just making a distinction between something important and an emergency. The point of my statement was that people can forget something important as we all do and or have done once in our lives.

I didn't misread that, but it also still makes no sense. If you turn off and/or ignore your damn phone while watching the movie, then you wont be "able to text back". It's a choice. You're choosing poorly IMO.

If it's so important that you must check and respond to it while in the theater, then it's important enough for you to get your *** out of the theater and deal with it where you're not bothering anyone. Nothing that you can respond to while still sitting down watching a movie can possibly be important enough to justify responding to while still sitting down watching a movie. I suspect you are placing far far too much importance on texts you receive. Unless someone is dying, or requires your assistance, or any of a number of things which would all require that you leave the theater anyway, then it's not important enough for you to justify responding to while watching the film in the theater.

It does make sense, but is a little awkwardly worded.

I am firmly on the side against texting in a theater, and I honestly don't understand how anyone could be against talking on the phone in a theater but not be against texting in a theater. It's the exact same disruption. A movie is a visual-audio experience. If you are talking on the phone or speaking loudly to your friends, you are disrupting the audio experience for other people. If you are flashing the light on your phone (texting), using a laser pointer on the screen, or blocking the view then you are disrupting the visual experience of a movie--which I consider to be even more important than sound.

The argument that people should ignore the bright light someone has on to text is equally valid for ignoring laser pointers or ignoring talking on the phone. You can't argue against one and not the others.

The pointer I could probably ignore for the most part. Talking on the phone would depend on how loud they were and how important the dialogue in the movie was to the movie itself. It probably wouldn't phase me an action flick.

However, I disagree that they're the same. Because you can ignore one thing, does not mean your able to ignore another, especially when it's a different sensory altogether.

As well, it was never that one should ignore it, so much as failing to was simply an inability to focus or as I later ceded, a choice not to ignore it.

That's starting to enter the territory of degree. Obviously quieter talking is more acceptable than louder talking, and dimmer/smaller lights are more tolerably than larger/brighter lights.

I think the clincher though is that it's a completely voluntary behavior and one most people can and are expected to avoid. Most phone conversations (text or talking) that occur in the theater are not time sensitive and something that could quite easily be delayed or taken care of before. By using your phone during the movie you are saying your immediate reply to this message is more important than the enjoyment of everyone else in the theater. It shows the talker holds little concern for other people.

Yeah. I guess it technically "makes sense" in that there's sense to it. I guess it's more that I just don't agree with his assumption that watching a film in a theater also includes a broad "text you back" ability. To me, you *aren't* able to text back in that situation. I mean, I guess technically you physically are able to, but you shouldn't be doing it. It kinda goes to the whole debate here.

This. You should refrain from doing anything which would detract from others film enjoyment. I just think it should be a common courtesy thing. Unfortunately, it seems like what used to be common isn't so much anymore.

And yes, I have on occasion missed parts of films because of this. But I'm not going to make everyone else in the theater suffer for my own convenience. That's just selfish as hell. And I'd never even consider doing this just to carry on some inane conversation with someone. If you're doing that, then why are you in the theater?

Why would you turn off your phone if you have silent and vibrate? That's the whole point of having those two modes. What if there really were an emergency and you missed it because you were watching a movie? Once again, unless you're flying, then there really aren't too many reasons to have your phone completely off.

The only other scenario that I've encountered is going to Secret/Top Secret environments. Even then, there's often a drop off place for your phones.

So, you think walking in front of people, covering parts of the screen and causing people to make way for you not once but twice is LESS annoying than a quick text response? I would love to see your logic on that.

Gbaji wrote:

False. That's a matter of your own personal opinion. How about someone looking for something in your office, room, house, etc. I could get up, walk in front of people and the screen just to say "it's inside the x" OR, I could just text it.

I'm not promoting texting in the theaters, I'm just stating that there can be legitimate reasons to text and you shouldn't complain about it.

Not at all. I suspect that you are placing far far too much importance against someone making a text in a theater. Like Ugly said, I can see how it can temporarily distract someone, but to the point where you can't concentrate on the movie, I'm not yet buying. As I said, I'm going to the theaters some time this week and will take notice on it to solidify my opinion.

A texting device isn't a spotlight. It's not even a typical household light bulb. Degree is important here. The light thrown off from a texting device is similar to someone whispering. That doesn't bother me either as I can ignore it.

Look, the texter is wrong but it doesn't remove the fact that you are unable to ignore something rather insignificant. I'm the same way with other insignificant things: like Alma. Who's fault is that? Mine.

The whole "but what if it's an emergency??" think is a crock. Guess what? Before mobile phones, people used to leave their houses for HOURS without being called at all! And if there was an "emergency", they dealt with it when they got back home.

Also, there are times that I don't even take my phone with me! AAAUUUGHHH!!!
