That's not the way I roll. If you text me, unless I'm unable to text back, I will text back.

Gbaji wrote:
If you'll forget to respond, then it wasn't very important, right? If it's really important, whomever texted you will text you again, or call you, or do the usual things one does when they actually need to get in touch with someone as opposed to sending something completely inane.

Only if you're not differentiating between important and an emergency. Are you implying that people don't forget important stuff? Besides, how will the distracted person know the difference between you texting something irrelevant vs something important? The damage is the same. According to the girl (who I don't believe), she was just using her cell to find her seat, but was treated the same.

Gbaji wrote:
Weren't you the one who insisted that he could text and drive completely safely?

I don't recall posting about that, but I only text at stop lights, not when my car is in motion.

Gbaji wrote:
If you have to argue that what you're doing isn't bothering anyone, when a whole thread full of people are telling you otherwise, you're probably bothering people.

Except no one has ever said that I was bothering them, but the general concept. If my flash of light underneath a box of light at the very top row somehow annoys you, then you have a problem.

As I've been writing in this forum, I recall seeing a bright light from a cell phone and was shocked, but as I said, I don't go to the movies often to solidify my opinion. I went 3+ years without going to the theaters and only have gone twice since I came back to the states last August.

Gbaji wrote:
And It'll bother me if I'm in front of you because I can hear you fiddling with your damn phone.
.....

We can hear you typing. And digging your phone out of your pocket. If you're in an environment where noise isn't permitted, don't think that texting is just peachy. It's not.

Then that's a crappy phone, touch screens don't make noises when typing. You're not going to hear anyone getting their phones out of their pockets unless they have keys or something in there. If they're constantly texting, then they probably will have their phones out the whole time.

Gbaji wrote:
It's about being courteous to those around you. You should refrain from doing anything which might bother someone, not make excuses and insist that what you're doing isn't. Just a suggestion.

The point of me making this thread was to find out if that was indeed distracting because again, I don't go to the theaters that often, but it didn't seem like a distraction to me, but after jogging my memory, I can see the potential.

Take your phone out to the lobby if it's that damned important.

This is why I love the Alamo Drafthouse. There's one that's only about a walk away from me :)

It's really not so hard to ignore your cell phone for less than two hours, is it? You're not a paramedic.

No annoying patrons and they serve alcohol and food. What's not to love?

I realized how annoying cellphones are in a theater when I called my dealer and he ******* me out because he was watching X2.

Turn off your damn cellphones, people.

That makes sense, I think getting the last word in is a compulsion with you.

Seriously? Really? How fucking bad are the movies that you're going to? While I disagree with the light being a distraction, I can understand it, but the noise of someone digging into their pocket? Does the noise of people breathing bother you as well?

The premise aside, that theater is freaking awesome. The patron they kicked out called back and left a profanity-filled drunken voicemail. Result? They turned it into a PSA to displace before Rated R films. Smiley: laugh

I hate making threads on Yahoo news topics, as most people probably already read them, but this is interesting to me.

So, the lady gets the boot for texting in a theater. I understand talking and making loud noises, but people are complaining that the light from the phone "removes you from the movie".. Really? I just want to get a second opinion/explanation on how texting in a theater distracts you from a movie?

I'm guessing before the movie there is some cute little clip about turning your cell phone is off. The woman was warned - twice. It seems like she was being intentionally defiant. I'd toss her out in a heartbeat.

Yeah, that light is freaking annoying. It's distracting. It has nothing to do with focus.

Also: If I can't text back, I'll text back...? WTF?

I think you're hugely overestimating the level of annoyance most people feel towards it. For myself, I find it pretty ******* annoying, but it's not something so bad that I'm going to talk to the person or to an usher to get them to stop. It doesn't impede my ability to watch the movie, but it detracts from the overall experience.

Ok seriously, who the hell ever gets an EMERGENCY text?? Really?? I've got an emergency and I'm going to fUcking TEXT someone??

Don't get me wrong, I'm a texter before I'll call someone. But if your friends and family are going to text you when your Uncle Bob has a heart attack, there's something wrong there.

I'm not overestimating. If anything, they're overstating.

Again, no reason why it should if you can tune it out/ignore it. Isn't that pretty much the definition of focusing?

Was that directed at me? I don't answer texts in theatres. I don't even answer calls unless its from home while I'm out with the kids. I don't not answer for the benefit of any of you though, I do it because I'm at a movie and want to watch it, not fuck around with my phone.

The average person can ignore much more and much worse, but that doesn't mean they'll be willing to. Rarely does someone completely remove themselves from the movie long enough to get an usher unless it has escalated. Usually someone ignores it for a while, then casts disapproving glances, then hushes, then optionally harsher words before someone actually gets up. And that's when you're trying to not make a ruckus. I've seen people just plain yell at ***** who continue to be discourteous even after being made aware that their behavior was disruptive.

Generally the way these things go is that the person who gets thrown out has this attitude of impunity and "Watchoo gonna do? Yeah, NOTHING." And likewise people are happy to get them thrown out because they're being gaping, *****-stuffed assholes.
