How about "I'm at the movies, I'll talk to you later"?
And if you don't reply? Won't they just assume "he must be busy and will talk to me later"? So the text is kinda unnecessary, isn't it?

That's just me, I like to respond ASAP or I'll forget (if not in a conversation)and there's nothing I hate more than an email/text/message/etc. being ignored.
If you'll forget to respond, then it wasn't very important, right? If it's really important, whomever texted you will text you again, or call you, or do the usual things one does when they actually need to get in touch with someone as opposed to sending something completely inane.

I tend to sit in the very top row right beneath the projector, you know that box of light? So I doubt my 3.14 seconds of light in a 1.5+ hour movie really distracted anyone given my position in the theater. At the same time, I wouldn't violate that rule knowing that I would get kicked out.
Weren't you the one who insisted that he could text and drive completely safely? Might have been someone else. If you have to argue that what you're doing isn't bothering anyone, when a whole thread full of people are telling you otherwise, you're probably bothering people. Do I mind if someone briefly checks an incoming message? No. But if you're constantly picking up your phone, reading it, and typing on it, then it will bother me. It'll bother me if I'm in the row next to you because I have this thing called peripheral vision that makes a bright light in a dark room very very noticeable. And It'll bother me if I'm in front of you because I can hear you fiddling with your damn phone.
It's about being courteous to those around you. You should refrain from doing anything which might bother someone, not make excuses and insist that what you're doing isn't. Just a suggestion.

If you want to talk to someone in real time, why not call them instead? Shocking thought, I know.
I don't know... maybe when you're in an environment where noise isn't permitted?
We can hear you typing. And digging your phone out of your pocket. If you're in an environment where noise isn't permitted, don't think that texting is just peachy. It's not.
