It was about property rights. Just so happened slavery still existed.

Slaves being the property in question.

So it was about slaves and stating the issue was about property rights just carries less stigma, but means the exact same thing.

The greatest tax sinks in this country are in urban areas, because that's where the majority of those on the dole live. The majority of our urban centers are not in the former Confederate states. So, while we may have fewer to deal with the expenditures would be heavier as the tax base would be reduced but the populations relying on it would be a greater percentage of the whole.

I think he's referring to the former confederate states tending to receive more tax money than they contribute.

edit: whoa way late with that. Allakhazam showed this thread as only having 1 new post.

Revisionist history by people who need to make their defeat sound more noble than "We got our asses kicked when we refused to stop owning other humans as property".

#133REDACTED, Posted: Jun 10 2011 at 9:12 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I guess the facts that Lincoln defended slavery as a lawyer, married a woman from a slave owning family, supported slave owners in politics, considered black to be lesser than whites and wanted them to leave the country, said "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it", etc etc etc, are all revisionism as well, yeah?

I never said the Union went to war to end slavery, I said the Confederacy seceded to preserve it.

But, aside from you getting that basic point wrong... yeah. Hurpaderp.

I know what he was talking about. It doesn't change the fact that there would still be plenty of Northern tax sinks left. According to your table, 21 of 37 states would still receive more than they pay in. Granted, that's a smaller percentage than exists today, but it's still considerable.

Yeah, literacy is a real *****, huh?

Well, you typed "hurpaderp" so that probably counts for something. If you're Carlos Mencia circa 2005, anyway.

You mean the USG approved, politically correct version of history?

Last I checked the president was elected by a majority of the people to lead the country as well as the armed forces. So president = Lincoln = North.

Deal with it.

Lincoln only won enough of the electoral college vote in a 4 way race were his name wasn't even on all the ballots. It can't be said that Lincoln would have won the election if Bell or Breckinridge hadn't run due to the split in the Democrat party thus Preventing Douglas from winning only one state.

Given that secession started just weeks after Lincoln's election, before Buchanan had even left office, it's kind of a moot point.
