Either way, I'm a little snobbish when it comes to my coffee. I bought a $14 bag of coffee beens over the summer (and never once regretted it). My wallet couldn't support that regularly, but holy sh*t it was good.

However, if I was drinking it purely as a stimulant, like my parents do, I'd feel very differently.


I remember when $14 would get you a pound of Kona peaberry. Now it's more like $70. Now I try to get locally roasted coffees whenever possible.

I usually pay £1.50 to £2 for a good double-shot espresso or americano, but it has to be decent coffee.

There's a small cafe in the lobby of my office block run by a guy from Sao Paulo - he makes a great brew for £1.20.

I'd rather drink my cat's diarrhoea than McD's or StarfUcks.

Mug size is important, because $2 cups of coffee are generally larges. So assuming a normal mug size, I'd need to get 14 cups to break even. 14 cups of coffee is 28 tablespoons of ground coffee, if you aren't making a lot at once.

The bag was 8oz. A 1 pound bag is approximately 2.5 cups of ground coffee from what I can find on the net, so I'd be looking at 1.75 cups. Ironically, that's exactly 1.75 tablespoons.

So, so far, we are looking at exactly $2 per cup of coffee when brewed at home from those beans.

Now I should note that the 14 was a type. It was supposed to be 24. >.<

I'll pay up to $3 for a flavored, fancy coffee drink but most days it's brewed at home from whatever or instant, or McD's. Coffee in the AM is more a necessity than a pleasure for me.

(not sayin JBM is the best, it's fantastic but I've had better coffee from Indonesia)

That's kinda what a mocha is though. Although it's more like 1/5th coffee (espresso actually), 1/5th syrup, and 3/5ths milk. Same deal with Cappuccino and latte and pretty much all drinks other than coffee (or cafe americano, which just uses hot water instead of milk). For the most part, the only difference between the various drinks is what's mixed in flavor wise and how much milk versus foam.

Mocha's are normally made with cocoa, not with syrup, and are about 1/3 espresso, not coffee, and steamed milk (not cold). Even if you use regular milk in order to make it a cold beverage, you are still using syrup, which you shouldn't, and coffee that is much weaker than it should be.

Damn. Even my favorite tea(which I think is expensive but worth it since it's not a daily thing) is only $18 for an 8oz container.

Though I think that's why my caffeine of choice is Dr Pepper, since you can usually get that for something like $7.50 for 24 cans.

Well I have over 20 pounds of Coffee at home, since I dont make it every day. (Gevalia coffee seasonal varieties.)
I don't pay more than 1.80 at a coffee shop, unless its espresso, so that is my answer. If prices rise I will still buy, but switch which coffee I do have in the house.

Elne and I will drink either coffee or tea.

When out I normally order tea, at Starbucks or other coffee shops that think any person can brew espresso if given the right equipment. I do order coffee at dinners with my eggs and hash browns, but they also normally give free refills.

Flavored mochas use syrup for the flavoring. You're correct that I neglected to mention the cocoa, but I figured that was assumed. I was trying to talk about the commonalities of all the coffee drinks, not just mochas.

Steamed milk was also assumed. Why would you think otherwise? Where the hell does the foam I mentioned come from? And lest I remind you you were the one who talked about using coffee instead of espresso. You do get that "coffee" is espresso mixed with hot water instead of steamed milk, right? Well, technically diluted with hot water, since you start with hot water (steam really) through a press to create the espresso in the first place.

But hey. I don't know anything about coffee.

I was critiquing the McD beverage for not being a mocha. Hence the 1/3 coffee, 1/3 milk, 1/3 syrup comment. I'll grant that I should have put "mocha" instead, since writing lacks tone. And I was critiquing your portions and the fact that you said they use syrup, which no self-respecting place does. It's almost always done with cocoa powder, so the customer can use the sweetener of their choice (or none). Plus, the taste difference between cocoa powder and syrup is huge.

You did mention milk vs. foam as being one of the big differences between the drinks, but you specifically said milk for a mocha. Hence the comment.
