Ok, so here's the deal. I really wanted this thing for an up coming trip in a couple weeks. The ipad2 isn't happening fast enough. The local best buy is not yet stocking them in sufficient quantity for a shopping failure such as myself. The online istore is quoting 4-6 weeks delivery (but you get free engraving). The ipad (1st gen) is even more rare (i'm sure Apple is responsible for the sudden disappearance of the retail ipad).

I'm kind of bummed. What's another good tablet that I can order from Amazon or pick up at the store?

Not too sure about this but have you tried Walmart or Target? My local wallyworld is showing both (iPad/2) in stock in the 16GB option.
I did. The guy at Sam's Club told me that their stores are getting them based on previous i-sales. I don't know if that's the case with all the chains. But if so, a couple stores in Maine have probably gotten, maybe, two.

edit - still making 'theyire errors after nearly 5 decades'.

My gosh but you're nerdy. Not the cool nerdy either.

Wow, I'm impressed you actually understood a reference.

I mean, it's unsubtle by design, but I'd started to think you were incapable of such an intellectual leap altogether. The airspace above your head is busier than fucking Heathrow - and twice as polluted, but that's another insult altogether.

I'd get at least the 32 GB iPad 2, but skip the 3G version unless you don't have WiFi at home. You'll want to make sure you have enough space not just for eBooks and apps, but for digital photos, mp3's, and movies. The iPad works great as a portable digital photo album, and I like to pre-load lots of TV series and movies on mine whenever I'm traveling somewhere. My wife mostly uses it to watch Netflix in bed, and it's also useful in the kitchen, both for the Epicurious app and for chopping vegetables - this is where the iPad 2's extra thinness really makes a difference. The iPad also makes a wonderful cat toy.

The last chapter in my story.

I'm driving to work this morning, and I'm hearing a story about how easily and successfully people are 'rooting' their e-readers to, essentially, turn them into tablets. The Nook color specifically runs the Android OS and most of its apps quite nicely. However, rooting the unit voids the warranty.

So, I rethink things (again), remind myself that what I started out wanting and still want/need more than anything else is an e-reader. Well, the Nook Color is indisputably one of the best e-readers out. I just ran out to B&N to look at them in person. The Nook Color does have a very appealing look, awesome picture, videos run smooth, and it has flash AND, the salesman told me that all Nook Colors would be getting an upgrade mid-April that will essentially be the rooting process. In other words, they're going to be pushing this thing as a tablet with all the android apps available. So I bought one.

The biggest downside for me is the lack of a camera, as I don't have a cellphone to snap pics with. I do have a pretty good digi-camera though. The battery life is not quite as long as ipad2 - 8hours versus 10 hours. Also the Nook Color comes with only 8GB memory, but is upgradeable to 64 with cards. Nooks graphics beat out the ipad2.

The flash quality is beautiful on this unit. I'm excited to see some movies on it. The netflix app should be available after the April upgrade:)
