I never resolved the e-book reader issue. Well, I did kind of - I decided I'd just get an ipad.

So, now I need to decide on the ipad or the ipad2 and how much memory I need.

There's about a $100.00 difference between the ipad and the ipad2, and about $100.00 difference between 16gb, 32gb, and 64gb each.

The ipad2 is supposedly much sleeker, skinnier and lighter. I've also seen some stuff about dual-cameras but I've not found any explanation about them or even why you need two cameras.

With the ipad2 only released like this/last week, I've not found much in the way of information at all.

My most specific questions are really about the memory needs. The main use for it will be to read books, but I'll also want to watch some movies, probably streamed versus stored. I'm sure I'll do a fair share of general web/news surfing and foruming on it.

I'll probably find some fun little apps that I have to have but don't plan on doing any real gaming or photo-shopping or anything like that. From what I understand the apps can really stack up and start eating up your memory.

Who has an ipad?

Bored people with too much money.

Don't get me wrong, I have an iPhone and a macbook pro, but I bought both second hand. I enjoy apple products, but the iPad just doesn't feel like it fills a role that isn't better served by other products.

I don't have an iPad, but I am interested in one. If you go to the Apple store online, they give a pretty good description of each level of memory as to what it can do (just surfing the web, storing some books, etc.).

At least, that's for the iPad 2.

To record in 3D? At least that's the only thing I can think of that requires 2 lenses.

they may mean one in the front and one in the back so you can take pictures or videochat, depending.

My work phone and laptap aside, I don't have a cellphone at all, or a laptop, or an ereader, or any mobile electronic gadget. Heck, I've never even owned an ipod. So this is serving the purpose of all those.

My understanding is that it allows you to have one product, as opposed to many. Not having one, I could be completely off base.

I suppose it would depend on what you already have at your disposal. The only thing an ipad is better at than a notebook right now is angry birds.

I have the kindle and hubby is waiting on his IPAD2 to ship. They sent the cover and the plugs... =/ I would say just get the Ipad2 since it comes with a camera (a little fancier)

If you're just going to use it as an ebook reader, the 8GB iPad 1 would probably be just fine.

I'd get one myself if I had extra cash lying around because laptops don't really lend themselves to reading the internets while upside down.

You can surf the web on a kindle but it's really slow and mine often will just freeze up on certain sites (however their web use is free)

I think the Kindle would barf on animated GIFs.

I honestly have less of a reason to carry my laptop everywhere now that I have an smartphone, and the iPad is like an oversized smartphone. It's considerably smaller than my laptop, while still letting me read my assignments and do other laptop-py things without carrying the thing around.

I also pretty much hate netbooks as much as most forum posters hate the iPad.

barf is a nice way of putting it =) I can say that kindle kind of sucks when you are trying to read journal articles. even though you can maximize the view, if you don't do it properly, you won't be able to view the columns properly. It works if you are an ebook junkie but past that just get an Ipad.

Ipad 2 seems good if you plan to take photos and do a bunch of web chatting but if you really aren't into that, just get an Ipad.

my husband isn't a fan of webbooks either. So hopefully he really enjoys his Ipad2 if it ever ships...

If you want to use it to read books, it's worth getting a kindle. It's a single purpose device, but in my experience it's totally worth it.

For me the ipad is the ideal living room computer. Browse the net, control various things in the house, play a few games, look stuff up... Fun fast and easy. I'd go with the ipad2 if I were getting one, although I'd recommend waiting a bit and going with one of the honeycomb devices that are hitting the market. The wifi only xoom or the samsung tablets that are coming out. iOS is honestly lagging quite a bit behind android at the moment.

Ipad2's are still pretty hard to find. They're still selling on ebay for a much higher-than-retail price.

I think I'm gonna go with the ipad2 versus the ipad. I'm not decided yet how much memory. I have an extra five hundred bucks lying about. If I want more memory than the 16gb I'll have to budget it in a bit.

Now...should I get one of them smart covers?!...and what color?! They're cool, but seriously, forty bucks for a little slab of polyurethane sounds excessive. I'm sure I can get one of my craftier friends to make me something earthy and unique to protect it.

I really don't see the point of buying an oversized smart phone that can't make phone calls.

My girlfriend loves the new Kindles, but she reads a ton. Personally, I only have a nice tower, a craptop, an iPod, and a phone that came out about the time when cameras in phones were new, and that's more than enough technology for me.

I am not going to keep up with the times well, granted, but an ipad seems pretty useless.

My gosh but you're nerdy. Not the cool nerdy either.

Ok, so here's the deal. I really wanted this thing for an up coming trip in a couple weeks. The ipad2 isn't happening fast enough. The local best buy is not yet stocking them in sufficient quantity for a shopping failure such as myself. The online istore is quoting 4-6 weeks delivery (but you get free engraving). The ipad (1st gen) is even more rare (i'm sure Apple is responsible for the sudden disappearance of the retail ipad).

I'm kind of bummed. What's another good tablet that I can order from Amazon or pick up at the store?

Not too sure about this but have you tried Walmart or Target? My local wallyworld is showing both (iPad/2) in stock in the 16GB option.
