They told me I was wrong, that it was all my imagination, that I was just overly sentimental. But I knew it was true, and now Science!!!! has proven me right.

The truth revealed

All the more reason to be excited about going to Ireland next year on vacation.

However, I'd be curious to know their methodology. Were they able to serve local beers in combination with non-local beers to remove the bias of knowing which beer is from Ireland (which may cause a placebo effect of people thinking it's better because they know they're at the real Irish bar)?

I'm assuming they used something like an ABX test

That's what I initially thought, but I started wondering, if you had to get a Guinness from an Irish pub and an English pub, how would you gather these two samples together without one getting old due to the travel time?

I get the feeling that I'm thinking too hard about this.

The group used 103 non-expert testers from different countries and brought them to 71 different pubs. Factors such as pub ambiance, Guinness appearance, flavor and aftertaste were all considered.

They marked each pint of Guinness on a Visual Analogue Scale of one to 100. Ireland received an average of 74, while the other countries marks averaged at just 57.

74 > 57 ... Can't get any more scientific than that! A Visual Analogue Scale!

And on a more serious note, drink lots of Guinness before you go to Ireland. If you're like me at all, you'll really like it. When you get to Ireland, it'll taste even better. But don't drink any for several months when you come back, you'll be disappointed. But once the wait is over, dive back in and it'll be terrific again.

Probably pouring the Guinness locally along with whatever else is in that particular pub; they mentioned going to like seventy places. Not pouring a glass in Dublin then carting it to them.

Though they seem to imply that delivering Guinness out of Ireland is in itself detrimental. Maybe it should be shipped overseas in wooden casks.

Guiness is carbonated with nitrogen creating little tiny bubbles as opposed to the way standard beer is. In Ireland it takes minutes to pour a Guiness from the tap as opposed to our standard 3 or 4 second pours around here. The texture is more smooth because of this creating a better glass. That's what my buddy from Ireland told me.
