Gamers are slavesFollow

Gamers are slaves, forced to battle in virtual arenas to amuse our masters and kept happy with occasional sequels and tall storeys of those who earn big bucks in the sunshine as professional gamers. But what if you wanted more? What if you started asking questions like "who are the masters"?

if your thinking Peter Molyneax and John Carmak or even EA and Eidos, you'd be so very wrong, even the biggest names in the games development are slaves themselves to the vested interests of perpetual struggle was our only destiny. Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony and Intel control gaming and have done ever since the bloody coup that saw the much-loved Emperor Sega stabbed repeatedly in the back. Now this Cabal continues to plot how we spend our money and they do it by the age-old practice of Divide & Conquer.

Ask your self this. Why do we need six different hardware platforms (PC, PS3, XBox360, Wii, DS & PSP)? Ok, Perhaps the handhelds do have the justification of size and portability, but in real terms maintaining four rival standards makes sense only to the manufacturers. Thirty five years into its history, gaming remains the only mainstream medium forced to divide its creative resources on the whim of companies who'd flog 'Preparation H' instead if they thought there was more money in it . But we've allowed them to get away with it for so long.

And pity the humble Developer, forced to reinvent the wheel every five years when the Cabal decides its time to upgrade. Can you imagine needing to buy a new TV to watch the next series of your favorite TV show? Of course not. The history of gaming is littered with forgotten heroes whose only crime was being so good they failed to notice someone moving the goalposts and then relocating the pitch 30 miles up the road.

To the hardware industry, gamers are there to be milked for every penny they have, we're suckers because we care about games and believe our masters do too. Wake up and smell the BS people!

So here's your chance to be counted. Wait until the launch of the next generation of games consols, queue up at midnight for the overprices boxes, and then smash one to pieces in the street. When the media gather round and ask you why, tell them:

"I'm Spartacus..."

Yes, put money in their pockets and then destroy the product so you have nothing to show for the money you spent! That'll show them!

As technology grew and graphics where improving leaps and bounds after a couple of years, the necessity to upgrade the hardware was very important. We are starting to reach a plateau in what games can produce in terms of graphics. Yes, the need for new hardware will still come around but not as often.

On a side note, if you really want to "stick it to the man" don't show up at midnight releases. Simple as that. They don't get the money and you don't "waste it". Also, a more enjoyable cause is to encourage gaming producers to actually turn out decent games instead of utter garbage.

Example : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3151oX8jBfw

That kind of crap needs to stop, simple as that.

The immediate issue isn't so much that we can't do better, it's that we can't do better with console hardware that people expect a 3-5+ year lifespan from. PC gaming could produce more impressive results except that the industry now revolves around consoles and PC games get retarded so there can be a console version that runs on obsolete hardware.

AlyxDK, I totally agree with you. Please do this and post a video of it, to encourage everyone to get the revolution started, of course!

Home made haloumi, lightly grilled and crumbled over a green sald with a balsamic dressing.

Better than any bacon.

Definitely something worth discussing! Do you find Sharp cheddar hard to find at the grocery store?

I blame the cheese derail in WOW General. I really want a nice chunk of Gorgonzola, but it is neigh unto impossible to find something like that here. I can get a decent Camembert, either pasteurized or not, but it just wouldn't be the same. Gorgonzola and some nice olives ... real ones. Alas, that it isn't going to happen here.

Back in the 16 bit era, you might have had a point, maybe the 32-bit era, but now everything is going towards multiplatform. There's no need to have all 6 hardware platforms unless you want EVERYTHING. Not only that, the target audiences are different with different motives, so the likelihood of that many people wanting all 6 is probably not as high as you think.

I personally don't mind having all 6, but I'll buy another DS (3DS) before buying a 360 or a PSP.
