Obama wants to raise gas pricesFollow

#1 Mar 02 2011 at 10:45 AM Rating: Sub-Default
Yes it's true.

Quote:
Barbour cited 2008 comments from Steven Chu, now President Barack Obama's energy secretary, that a gradual increase in gasoline taxes could coax consumers into dumping their gas-guzzlers and finding homes closer to where they work. Chu, then a Nobel Prize-winning professor, argued that higher costs per gallon could force investments in alternative fuels and spur cleaner energy sources

Quote:
In 2008, while the head of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, Chu told The Wall Street Journal that energy prices were the lynchpin to an energy overhaul.

"Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe," Chu said in September 2008.

Change you can believe in.

In a sign of one major internal difference, Mr. Chu has called for gradually ramping up gasoline taxes over 15 years to coax consumers into buying more-efficient cars and living in neighborhoods closer to work.

"Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe," Mr. Chu, who directs the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal in September.

But Mr. Obama has dismissed the idea of boosting the federal gasoline tax, a move energy experts say could be the single most effective step to promote alternative energies and temper demand. Mr. Obama said Sunday that a heightened gas tax would be a "mistake" because it would put "additional burdens on American families right now."

Funny thing, context.

Well this was a quick thread. Don't you ever get tired of always being wrong, virus?

I love it that varus goes through the trouble of providing links that disprove his claims, right in his own OP. A tacit acknowledgment of the truth, methinks.

That's his superlative private school education shining through again. Alas, that we all could not enjoy such intellectual largess.

Doesn't get more obvious than that. Yes, he appointed him as energy secretary. He's also disagreeing with that proposition his energy secretary suggested.

Since when were we allies with Libya? I find your support of Gadaffi peculiar.

phil,

Yes I get that all you have is Obama's word to go on. Do you actually have any evidence that Obama's doing anything to reduce the price of oil?
By doing what, exactly? That's not exactly in his control.

If you're suggesting we support middle east dictators just so that the price of oil stays down, then lol. Probably shouldn't have gone into Iraq if you think that, huh?

varusword75 wrote:
Seeing to it that the US govn allows companies to drill in gulf isn't in his control?
He has allowed drilling in the Gulf again. Been that way since last fall, IIRC. Of course, allowing companies to start drilling right now isn't going to have an impact on the supply (and in turn, price) of gas for another 7-8 years. Then the oil retrieved only goes to the company that found it which ends up being sold globally, not directly to the US. So the result of the new oil well has a very minimal impact on prices of gas.

varusword75 wrote:
Proposing a idiotic, and expensive, rail system isn't in his control?
What does that have to do with gas prices?

I'm actually in favor of $4(+)/gal gas if we can lower pricing in other areas. @4 we get quite a spike in the US energy R&D sector, and a shift toward other energy projects. We don't even necessarily need to raise taxes, just reduce some of the internal spending on petrol centric resources.

It's only a conspiracy if they're being deceitful about it. Obama and his team have made it publicly clear they're out to destroy the oil industry.

You JUST said that Obama is lying about his intention to raise gas taxes. You accused him of being deceitful without any evidence against his statement. You accused him of conspiring with the energy secretary he appointed.

So yeah, it's a conspiracy theory, by definition.

Disappointed to hear your consent of middle east dictators solely because of oil prices.
