Is Applesauce a liquid or a solid?Follow

#1 Feb 23 2011 at 6:02 PM Rating: Decent
My wife and I are debating as to whether applesauce is a liquid or a solid. I believe it is a liquid because it does not maintain it's own shape, and forms to whatever container it is put in.

Any insight?

Edited: put solid, meant liquid.

That is the properties of a solid?

Real answer, it is neither one or the other, it is both. It is the liquid parts of an apple mixed with the pulverized solid portions of an apple. It's like crushing ice and mixing it with water. It is solid water mixed in liquid water.

I'd say liquid because you can pour it and it assumes the shape of the container it's in. I've forgotten the "properties" of each though. Grade 6 was a long time ago. :(

It's a slurry.

Edit: Or you can go by MGS terms and call it a Solidus.

That's easy! The apple is solid, and the sauce is liquid. Problem solved.

It's somewhat of a flawed question; it's like asking if a glass of ice water is a solid or a liquid.

It's a mixture. The apple juice is a liquid and the fibrous solid of the apple just sits in it. It's not even a sol or gel, just a mixture.

I think one of the properties is about the molecules not being fixed in position. The solid portions of apple sauce are fixed, so the whole mixture is not a liquid. Forgetting that property, you would be able to classify sand as a liquid.

It is merely a liquid mixed with a solid. Water with dissolved sugars and fiber-ish pieces of solid apple mixed throughout.

I think it's the opposite of whatever Varus says it is.

Just to be clear, would the term Colloid apply to Applesauce?

It's a slurrified fruit compound. Alternately, it could be considered drinkified apples, or snackified apple juice.

The first line of the Wikipedia article wrote:
A colloid is a substance microscopically dispersed evenly throughout another substance.

It is a solid turning to liquid. Sort of like my bank account.
