Anyone else on Netflix thinking of switching? http://content.usatoday.com/communities/technologylive/post/2011/02/amazon-launches-unlimited-streaming-for-prime-members/1

I only have the streaming plan through Netflix nowadays anyway (can't be bothered with the discs and generally require instant gratification). I like the selection on Netflix, but they don't add new stuff often enough (for me). The only thing I don't like about Amazon Prime is that you sign up for a year instead of monthly. The free 2 day shipping would be a nice bonus as well...I order from Amazon fairly often.

Interesting but I actually do use the mail feature from Netflix to get stuff not available on streaming or Blu-Ray discs for the eye candy movies. I did trim down to the 1-at-a-time plan though since I primarily use the streaming.

I guess I'd have to have a better feel for Amazon's catalog. I know Netflix has had to undergo all manner of negotiations for the studio steaming deals it has so I doubt Amazon will be able to jump into the same depth immediately.

I might give it a shot if they start streaming through Xbox or Wii. One of these days I'll get an HDMI cable and I can use my computer with my TV for stuff like this. I'm so behind the times. =(

I stream through my Wii. Now that they have a web browser for it and you can access YouTube, etc through the Wii, that's how I do any of that stuff I want to see on the TV as well. I do have a computer next to the TV but getting the picture to show up on there takes more options switching than I ever feel like doing.

Same here. But if I get the HDMI cable, it makes it less painful.

Thanks for the heads up, Nexa - I will definitely look into this. I'd be saving significantly with Amazon Prime's annual cost of $79.

I do the Netflix 2 (Blu-Ray) DVD at a time plan with free streaming for a total of $19.07/month which comes to $228.84/yearly. I average about 4 DVDs a week.

I watch the Netflix streaming via my X-Box 360 or Sony Playstation 3 (which I use for the Blu-Ray DVDs).

Are Blu-Ray films available on the Amazon Prime streaming?

It's worth doing. I Cancelled our cable almost a year ago so that all we use is youtube, netflix and hulu for our television entertainment (also dvds)

I have been considering the amazon prime, it's a pretty sweet deal to get free two day delivery and 5k movies.. but since most of my orders are ebooks, I'm still on the fence. I might order it plus netflix but I don't think it has enough to make me drop netflix, yet.

You'll have to pry my cable remote from my cold dead hands! ;)

Kidding aside, I actually enjoy channel surfing (of a sort). I like looking through the guide to see what's on "right now", rather than choosing something in advance. I just find that I'll occasionaly stumble upon some film that I find interesting which I might otherwise never have watched if it hadn't been right there. If I'd had to select it out of a massive library, it would have gone unnoticed and unwatched. This doesn't preclude me selectively watching stuff I'm interested in via one method or another, but if that was all I did, I'd miss out on a lot of stuff IMO.

Different strokes for different folks of course, but for me, that makes paying a higher premium for cable worth it.

Locally I get history channel, tbs, bravo and the usual local channels in english and spanish heh so we aren't missing much.

Anything that I miss, I have thus far been able to buy season passes to on ITunes (The Walking Dead) I just found that we were using netflix so much, it didn't justify paying the money for cable. I think the only channel I miss is the food network (Iron chef addict, here) but Bravo has enough cooking competitions to fill that void.

Netflix will be adding a whole bunch of classic stuff in March, by the way.

Mmmm, Andy Griffith.

I love me some Amazon, though. In fact it's one of the rare tech stocks I own. By all means, support them!

We got Direct tv a few months ago. We're still getting free movie channels. We just lost our free HBO, but got free Starz. We don't have any Netflix atm. I can't get into watching movies on my computer and my tv is old - it doesn't seem worth the effort to try and get a computer hooked to it.

The Amazon deal is interesting though. If/when I'm ready for a movie service again, I'll likely check it out. I do buy stuff from Amazon, so the shipping deal would be cool.

Here's what one report says about the current Amazon Prime service:

macgasm wrote:
Now don’t get too excited about this new feature. Amazon’s library for Prime members is still pretty small compared to that of Netflix or even Apple‘s offerings. The initial library will “start with a 5000 movie and TV Show catalog…” The other caveat is that unless you own a streaming device that will play Amazon’s content, such as the Roku, you are out of luck on watching videos on your big screen TV. You will be relegated to your computer screen for watching a movie.

I wonder if that 5000 number counts individual episodes as separate entities since Amazon does sell them separately. I see this on the "What's New on Netflix Streaming?" services where they say "300 items added" and 150 of them are "Cagney & Lacey S2E11". The biggest thing I can see for Amazon in the immediate future is if they're streaming recent TV episodes that Netflix doesn't have as a season collection yet. Then I suppose it's Hulu who needs to worry more than Netflix in the short term.

I don't think it's included in the free Amazon Prime for Students.

:(

Not free for students, you gotta upgrade to a paid account :(

I'm guessing they'll be sprucing things up a bit as it's a freebie they're offering to many customers.

I've watched a ton of odd-ball movies though since we switched to direct tv. Last weekend I watched:

Mistress of Spice was kind of corny but I liked it. It's about a young Indian woman who grows up as a 'spice mistress'. She comes to the US and opens up a spice shop. She helps people settle their problems through the use of her spices. She's not allowed to ever use the spices for herself or touch another human (intimately). She falls in love with some yankee hotty and the spices lash out in various ways. Big red chili pepper is always silently scolding her;)

Gigantic was about a 28 year old guy that's trying to adopt a baby from China. The guy's family is, apparently, well off. But he works in this funky mattress warehouse store that appears to be in an old warehouse. They never really explain why he's working there and has essentially shunned the more well-to-do trappings of his family. Anyway, the guy falls for some woman just before the adoption goes through, causing some turmoil. It was an ok movie I guess, but there was just too much stuff that didn't make sense. The fathers of the young man and the young woman he falls for were played by Ed Asner and John Goodman.

Middle of Nowhere is essentially a young woman coming of age story. This girls mom has had some financial difficulties leaving the young woman without the 12k she needs to start college to eventually become a doctor. So, the girl hooks up with this other kid and sells dope. Along the way she sleeps with a creep, discovers secrets about her mother and stuff like that. I really liked the performance of the girls partner in crime. The girl and her movie mother are played by Susan Sarandon and her real life daughter.

Early work release cuz of snow.

You sure that's not really a documentary?
