one of the things that does bother me about the coverage of all the unrest going on in the ME is how the media constantly labels the various protests and revolts as "democracy in action".
One of the things that bothers me is how the media keeps labelling the protests as being along religious lines, which immediatly stirs tw@ts like varus and his ilk into spouting off about 'radical Islam'. With the probable exception of Bahrain, all the uprisings have been secular uprisings railing against years of oppresion at the hands of (usually) military dictatorships.
These people, who happen to also be muslims, who the West has paid vast sums of money to their dictators to control, for years, have stood up to demand to be given back the control over their lives that has been denied to them for so long. To think for a minute that these educated, angry populations who are demanding their freedom, and are willing to face down tanks and heavy weapons to achieve it, will forget the source of the weapons and armour and finances that kept them under the heel for so long was from the politicians and business interests of the West, is delusional.
The events in the ME unfolding at the moment have their roots in the greed, racism and imperialstic attitudes of decades of westerrn involvement in the affairs of the region. That involvement is most apparent and visceral in Saudi Arabia and along with the thieving 'Royal Family', I imagine that their are some very sweaty palms in the upper reaches in the leadership of the US/EU empires at the moment.
That (spineless) veto (the first of Obamas reign) in regards to the halting of Israels illegal settlement building on occupied land in the Palestinian territories is in serious danger of coming back and biting Mr. Obama in the ***** Wheres 'we' in the west tend to struggle to remember what we had for breakfast yesterday, those in the ME can and do carry the memory of insults with them for generations.
Its a bloody scary series of events that are unfolding in the area, but it was bound to happen sooner or later. The situation has been unsustainable for years now. When the unrest reaches Saudi Arabia and the population there lets loose, the US and the West in general needs to be able to adapt to the paradigm shift that will be necessary. If the dinosaurs in the West continue to insist on supporting the dinosaurs in the ME, the events in Libya will pale in comparison to what follows.
I'm glad to be in the middle of a large ocean on the other side of the world......
