You live a sheltered life in Canada. The rest of the world got rocked when the US's economy tumbled. Canada felt a hit, but has survived quite well. Our economy has traditionally been very dependent on the US's economy, which means we should have bombed with them. While we may not be doing as much internationally, the simple fact is, things at home were taken care of.

I'm not giving Harper personal credit for that.

Nor should you. It likely had more to do with the stewardship of your Queen.

That being said you can sometimes get a fine for possession but it is not a criminal offense, it is akin to leaving your car parked in a no parking zone, Not illegal, just punishable by a fine. However most cops here turn a blind eye to small amounts because it isn't worth their time doing the paper work for something that is viewed as unimportant criminally in society. (hence why weed was decriminalized in the first place, and the limits of the charges were increased slightly if you did have over a certain amount or more than 2 plants.)

I've been fined for possession (about as bad as a parking ticket, yeah) and also had my stash thrown out and told to be on my way. Many cops and others in the US (who aren't specifically DEA) are more understanding about the horrors of the demon weed.

And why should you? If he'd listened to Jack and Mikey, we'd be drowning in more debt. We'd have had huge overhauls to our mortgage system, when it was for the most part, fine and just needed some tweaking. We'd also be paying higher taxes. He's arrogant, and cold, and lacks much personality. But he's gotten done what we needed done.

But no, you don't have to give him credit for what he's done, just knock him for what he hasn't done. Do you have any idea how fucked we'd be had Jack been running the government? Ignatieff might have something going for him, maybe.

You should donate a larger portion of your income to government then instead of supporting people trying to force it on those that do mind.

Honestly, if I can live comfortably, I don't care one bit about another couple percent being paid to taxes. I just wish I could figure out why comfortable isn't enough for most people.

Neither do I, if there's a need for it. There wasn't a need for it though.

I would gladly pay more in taxes to improve healthcare, or to see more resources made available to help more people get off of welfare. What I don't want to spend more taxes on is spending money for the sake of spending more money.

Goals: Finish college, work in food service industry, live comfortably off of working at a decent restaurant(non-chain, something nice, but not so fancy that the prices and lack of decent portions **** me off), rise to the point of running the kitchen.

I don't need to be rich to do this, and if I did get rich, I'd complain even less about taxes. I'd rather live comfortably doing what I love rather than get rich doing something boring as ****.

You know, if people just lived comfortably, you'd never attain your goals. Most people living comfortably don't have enough extra cash around to consistently eat out.

If you only eat 75-85% of your meal, making sure to leave some behind, you can complain at the end of the meal and get it all for free.

Yes they can, they just need to not buy the $5 beer, and aim at going to places where a meal might cost say, $60- as opposed to $100+. Not to mention, it would basically mean I'm living comfortably on the dollars of those who have too much. Because no matter what, they'll always be there, spending their money, paying for my food and home. And I'll gladly take their money.

There used to be a restaurant in town that was well priced and always did good business. It was owned by the guy who owns the tv and radio stations. Well educated and trained chefs made the food. The service was amazing. Quite affordable too, even the families who lived in the nearby low income housing ate there quite a bit. Then a large retailer offered him a bunch of money for the building due it's good location so he closed it down and sold it to Shopper's Drug Mart.

You don't need to be rich to eat good food, the person who owns the place that makes the good food just needs to be willing to take home enough(after bills, wages, suplies, etc. are paid for) to live comfortably and provide for his family rather than bring home enough to buy a cottage, a boat, and 2 BMWs...every year.

What? That's what people did when I was in university, serving tables. And somehow, it seemed to work. Management would always give it to them, despite me checking in a few times and being told everything was fine.

I hate people who do that, I refuse to share a table in a restaurant with the people I know who have done that. If there's something wrong, complain before eating most of the meal, otherwise, shut up and eat your damn food.

All taxes need to be justified. It's really weird to hear someone say I wouldn't mind paying more taxes without actually caring about what it's spent on.

You can't give all the credit to Harper for weathering the storm, there was a lot of groundwork in the banking sectors that helped us tremendously. Harper however did do an excellent job of not overreacting and changing things just for change sake. I don't like his fairly ruthless style of politics, (ie, trying to unilaterally kill the wheat board), but I'm happy with the how the crash was handled.
