Need help picking out a video cameraFollow

Hi folks...I need advice on yet another electronic device (my phone is working fine, thankyouverymuch).

I'm taking Hannah to DW for her 6th birthday in April (yeah...6...wtf?) and I want to get one of them thar pocket sized video cameras. I like the Flip a lot except I really would prefer something with removable storage. The Kodak Zi8 has removable storage, but I have some reservations about how dependable the camera is after reading some of the negative reviews on Amazon so I was wondering if anyone here has one?

The thing is, I don't want to bring my laptop with me because I don't like the idea of leaving it in the hotel nor do I want to carry the thing around through the parks. The Flip can only hold like 2 hours of HD video, which may end up being the way I go and using my digital camera as backup (it can take fairly decent video...it just doesn't have built in image stabilization and whatnot).

I definitely want it to be something that I can carry in my pocket or purse...something pretty small/slim. I'm trying to avoid carting a backpack around all day if I can help it.

Anyway, advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Nexa

Would something like this be too large:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830144319

Samsung is pretty new to the video camera game, but they have been making LCD's and CMOS sensors for years so I wouldn't have too many qualms about going with them in terms of quality and reliability personally. Their cameras have features on par with the more expensive canon models at about 3/4ths the price.

If an inexpensive unit is a key consideration, take a look at this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830251003
It's really tiny, it shoots HD video, it has a removable memory card, and it's $120. That being said, the zoom settings on it suck. but if you are just shooting fixed range video and don't need to do alot of xooming in and out, it might be ideal.

If the samsung one is too large, let me know. Also, do you have an ideal price range on this?

We're headed to Japan at the end of May. This thread may come in handy, as all we currently have is a digital camera.

Me: Buy the flip and bring a laptop.
Nexa: I'm having the bags sent to the hotel.
Me: What?
Nexa: I'm not bringing a laptop!
Me: What? Wait, why?
Nexa: STOP BOTHERING ME!

Please help, though, people. This is a subject I couldn't care less about from a technical standpoint, but I'm not going to DW (because there are limits, damnit) but I DO want lots of video evidence for Hannah of how awesome her childhood was when she starts going to through puberty and telling us we're monsters.

No good advice here. Flea has a Flip I got her for Christmas '09 and is completely happy with it.

Price isn't a major consideration but anything really expensive would likely 1. Have a bunch of features I'll never take advantage of and 2. cause me to be super concerned about it being lost or damaged or me "hurting" it or whatnot. I basically want a Flip that's 1080 and has removable storage. However, as Smash has so lovingly pointed out, only an insane person would bring 5 SD cards to switch out rather than bring a laptop. Of course, he new I was insane well before he decided to start dating me so he only has himself to blame.

The sony is too big...I really do want something I can stick in my purse. I'm also going to have my digital camera (which can also be a backup video camera if I need it, but I really want the storage on that to be for still shots). I only want to carry one purse/small bag around the parks (I'm looking for one that's water resistant for the water rides and I'm going to have gallon size zip lock freezer bags to put stuff in...I don't care if that makes me a lunatic). I want a hand free for holding on to Hannah and I don't want to be lugging around a heavy bag all day.

The second one you linked seems too cheaply made and I am too spazzy to not have image stabilization. I can't stand still, especially when I know I'm supposed to be.

I'm thinking the Zi8 is the only option that fits...it's got the 1080 and the removable storage thing going for it. I was just hoping someone here might have one and could tell me whether or not it's crap. Of course, if there's something else like that, enlighten me.

Thanks for all the input, it's very much appreciated!!

The supposed 1080P flip showed up in testing at the FCC today apperently: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/28/flip-mino-hd-with-802-11n-wifi-hits-the-fcc/

Usually, that means a productin about 2 months timeframe if all goes well. Might be worth waiting.

Why not combine both and get a Canon 5D mk II?

Ok so that would cost somewhere around $5-6k and would require an extra bag but still, it gives image quality equal to professional cameras for a fraction of the price! Smiley: tongue

Showing them the videos during that phase won't help at all. You'll still be horrible people who don't let her do anything fun. After the fact though, the videos are a great tool to make sure they feel guilty and send you to a really good nursing home.

Yeah, but she could just get 4-5 ~$200 cameras and be doing just fine.

Or bring her laptop.

With the difference that the Canon 5D mk II produces professional quality video.

But yeah, not really a serious suggestion.
Bringing a video camera that can hold SD cards and bringing 2 16 GB SD cards should be enough to record every second of Disney World.
And one spare SD card takes up a lot less space (not to mention weight) than a laptop so I can understand why Nexa would prefer that.

I think we have one, already. I'd have to look in the closet of $5,000 **** we buy and never use, which would take a while, but it's too big regardless. Read the question, damn it, this isn't the place for your strange bourgeoisie tech fetishes, there's no punchline for us. I'm not you. If I thought that Cannon was the best solution, I'd buy 10 of them.

There are a million Asians roaming the grounds of Disney World at any given time, chattering and meandering and all the while with language skills too limited to accurately describe the white woman who just snatched their camera. Just sayin', if you're going to expose the kid to such toxic levels of consumerism you might as well teach her how to save a buck, too. Plus, those people know their tech, so you can feel confident you'll get a snazzy camera.

You still run into the giant caveat that even should they use a professional grade camera, it will still look horribly dated by the time they wish to view the material.
