One of our in-house lawyers almost died on McKinley a couple years a go. It was his second attempt to reach the summit of Alaska's highest mountain. He'd been working towards his goal of standing upon the highest elevated piece of land in each of the 50 states. Alaska is now his last, but I don't think his wife is gonna let him try again.

Today on the radio I'm hearing about how there is a bill being sponsored to officially declare the Whoopie Pie our state dessert. Im thinking this could be the pointless life achievement I chase after....try the 50 desserts of the 50 states!!

Does your state have a state dessert?

According to lolwiki, Illinois' state snack food is popcorn and our state fruit is the apple.

Why we needed a state snack food is anyone's guess.

Hm. Looks like we got nuthin' in Tennessee. I half expected "RC Cola and a moon pie" to be our state food.

I can't stop laughing at the Oklahoma entry. There is no variation, everything there is just a "State Meal".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_foods

Edit: I stand corrected, there is a State Pie (Pecan), State Fruit (Strawberry), and State Vegetable (Watermelon wtf?).

In Maryland our state dessert is Smith Island Cake.

I never had it, but then I'm a transplant from Chicago, Illinois.

Here's an update on the Whoopie Pie bill debate:

For - Whoopie Pies are a Maine thing. They're comforting. They're Chocolate and creamy goodness. It will stimulate the local and growing whoopie pie business.

Against - Whoopie Pies were created in Pennsylvania. One of the main(e) ingredients is lard so we'd be promoting childhood obesity. Maine's dessert should be Wild Maine Blueberry Pie (nutritious and delicious).

If someone with premium could make a poll whether Maine's Dessert should be Whoopies Pies or not, we could settle this.

What should Maine's State Dessert Be?
Whoopie Pie:0 (0.0%)
Wild Maine Blueberry Pie:6 (75.0%)
The Sahara:2 (25.0%)
The Mojave:0 (%)
Total:8

MA state foods are a mix of pandering to namesake items and weird stuff. So, pretty much a accurate representation of the regional zeitgeist.

It's also one of the larger lists, barring Oklahoma, who's legislature evidently just has a lot of free time on it's hands.

You've likely already had Boston Cream Pie, so you can check that one off the list already...

So I look Jonwin up on the forums after I was lost in the nether for well over a year... and he's talking about donuts. LoL.

Sour-creamed glazed ftw by the way. Unofficial donut of my part of Canada.

In an attempt to not offend the Blueberry Pie, the Whoopie Pie is now going for the official designation as the Maine State 'Treat'. It's still a long shot though. Those PA beginnings are pretty hard to get past.

NJ:

State Fruit- Northern Highbush Blueberry

State Vegetable- Jersey Tomato (Apparently, NJ doesn't care about biology. And this is especially jarring, since it should obviously be sweet corn).

State Dance- Square Dance (I'm hating jersey more and more, and I wasn't exactly fond of it to begin with).

Missouri's state dessert is the ice cream cone. XD

I've never actually had a Boston Cream PIE (I'm assuming the donuts don't count). The last two times I was in Boston, I intended to. But it just didn't happen.
