So? He also said there's only so many hours in a day. If he would rather attend an event by group A than group B, who gives a fuck?

Y'know what I see there? I see a man being harrassed by reporters to answer questions he had already answered. I see a man, obviously indicating that the press conference is over by trying to leave, while some overzealous asshole reporters follow him down the hall haranguing him. Considering how *I* would react to such harrassment, I think he was remarkably calm.

Personally, I could do without my Governor walking around telling everyone to kiss his ***. I think he said something similar in regards to Obama. It's a bit childish, we don't really need a Gov. Ventura here in Maine.

The problem is that one of the 'reasons' that the guy turned down the NAACP was the blanket term 'special interest group.'

Honestly, the guy is somewhat nuts, and a bit of a phony. I only piped in earlier when I believed that it was being implied that he was racist.

The fact that the NAACP was inviting him to participate in a celebration of a man who urged us all to judge people by the content of their character and not the color of their skin by insisting that he visit only people of one skin color.

No. But you did associate the NAACP with the "black community". Which I think is the point. Surely you can agree that disagreeing with or disliking a group does not equate to disagreeing with or disliking an entire race, right?

He's a governor. In a public interview he told the NAACP they could kiss his ***. Having an adopted son from Jamaica is irrelevant.

Irrelevant to what? What point were you trying to make with this thread? Are you claiming that your embarrassment had nothing to do with some presumed racial aspect of this issue? If so, why expand the NAACP to the "black community"? It seems as though his view of black people is directly relevant.

I'm sure Dr. King would be thrilled to hear his words being used to justify the withholding of privilege for blacks despite the reality that they are not judged only by the content of their character in less favorable circumstances.

How is it stupid to think that maybe a great civil rights activist wouldn't exactly appreciate his words being used to justify the withholding of benefits to a group he defended until they were actually held up equally in society?

I'm sure what you mean to suggest is that the esteemed governor is embodying the spirit of Dr. King by wanting to visit all inmates, regardless of color. That doesn't mean it isn't idiotic to suggest that Dr. King would have appreciated those words being used in defense of turning down the NAACP. And Dr. King aside, it doesn't mean it isn't an idiotic sentiment in an actual context like this one-- King's dream is an ideal, and one that actually doesn't jive all that well with the contemporary understanding of diversity issues. It isn't necessarily unreasonable for them to want him to visit only black inmates.

Not to mention that Dr. King would probably judge all the inmates pretty poorly, what with the content of their character and all.

We'll just have to disagree about that, then. I don't care about black people enough to have this debate.

For the record:

After Lepages comments about his 'adopted' black son, I got to thinking it was kind of funny that I know nothing about this son. The Lepage daughter was constantly in the spotlights and family pictures from the night he won election and from his inauguration didnt' show a son at all. Ok, well the kid is young underage he's being protected, etc, etc.

Turns out that the adopted son was not really adopted. The now 27-year-old's father used to caddie for Lepage down in Jamica. The kid came to Waterville for high school to play on the golf team and stayed on to go to college. He's not a US citizen and hasn't lived in Waterville (the Lepage home) since he was 17.

So, the prison thing - reports from others about the request and refusal:

Channel 6 wrote:
LePage said he would have attended the forum if he would have been able to meet with all prisoners. But Rachel Talbot Ross, president of Portland's chapter of the NAACP told NEWS CENTER that the invitation, which went out to all candidates, did not specify the race of the prisoners. She went on to say, "We would not be allowed to have that kind of program at the Maine State Prison."

Talbot Ross said the event was part of a voter registration effort the NAACP had helped organize at the prison. She said that LePage was the only candidate who turned down the NAACP's request, and that he had cited a scheduling conflict.

Denise Lord, associate commissioner in the Department of Corrections, tells NEWS CENTER that she is not familiar with this specific invitation, but that she would be surprised if the prison had allowed an event that was only for black inmates.

While I'm raging let me also complain about how, before he was even swore in, he gave his 22-year-old daughter a lofty position in his administration (assistant to chief of staff)...making easily twice what the normal pro/tech entry level state worker would receive. To this day he evades paying property taxes to the state of Maine for his home(s). Of course he moved into the governors mansion with his grown child and wife (a legal resident of Florida) within days of winning the election (with only 31% of the vote). The fellow he's nominated to head up my agency (environmental protection) is a land developer whose firm just landed the bid for our first huge ugly giant casino. My agency is on the hook for no fewer than four permits for this project (is this not blaring/glaring/in-your-face conflict of interest??).

It's like he's going out of his way to make a mockery of our state government.
