Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) was shot in the head by a gunman today and reports are conflicted about whether she is alive or not.
New York Times wrote:
Gabrielle Giffords, a congresswoman from Arizona, was shot in the head on Saturday at a public event held at a grocery store in Tucson, her spokesman, C. J. Karamargin, said. Others at the event, including members of her staff, were among the injured.

Her condition was unknown. She was taken to University Medical Center in Tucson, the trauma center for the area, about 10 miles away. Even though NPR and CNN reported that she had been killed, Darci Slater, a hospital spokeswoman, said that Ms. Giffords was in surgery.
[...]
“He must have got off 20 rounds,” he said. Ms. Giffords slumped to the ground and staff members immediately rushed to her aid, Dr. Rayle said.

Dr. Rayle said he performed CPR on some of the victims. He said one of the victims was a young child and appeared to be in critical condition with a gunshot wound.

He said that one of the staffers tackled the gunman and that he and others helped detain the suspect. The doctor described the gunman as a white male in his mid-20s with short hair and “dressed in a shabby manner.”
[...]
The shooting occurred at a Safeway supermarket in northwest Tucson as Ms. Giffords hosted an event, called “Congress on Your Corner, to allow members of the 8th Congressional District to meet her individually. She has held several events since first taking office in January 2007. At one such event in 2009, a protester was removed by police when his pistol fell on the supermarket floor.

Last March, her Tucson office was vandalized a few hours after the House vote overhauling the nation’s health care system, the authorities said. Earlier events in Tucson, Oro Valley, Green Valley, Sierra Vista, and Douglas had attracted between 75 and 150 people, according to a statement announcing the event. This was her first event since her re-election to a third term in November.

Edit: Fox is now reporting that she is in critical condition.

Last video on what appears to be the shooter's youtube page.

Another pseudo-intellectual conspiracy theorist, it seems, took to the gun.

I am. Foolish of me to think that wearing tricorne hats and waving 'don't tread on me' flags could inspire something like this.

She had been the target of an email disinformation campaign. Not saying that was the motive, but the politics of hate have a lot to answer for in general.

This guy? I don't know. Maybe he's a stalker. Maybe there's a personal connection. But quite possibly he's an unstable guy who was given a focus and a target by hate mongers out to make a cynical buck.

His MySpace page was taken down (seriously, man? MySpace?) but his "favorite books" list included Ayn Rand and the Communist Manifesto. He didn't seem to subscribe to a particular ideology beyond "nutbag".

This is freaky, I swear that my local CBS affiliate reported on this shooting last night around 6 PM EST. Can they see the future?

Maybe I ascribe too much to him, but it would seem to me he's trying to make himself a hero to the "revolutionaries," which is the last thing we need. The media surely won't let it slip under the radar, though, so congrats to the guy if that was his motive.

Thats kind of the scary thing about Arizona. Everyone is armed, everywhere. I remember during college the first time I ever walked into an arizona bank and more than 5 people in line in front of me were carrying large calibre revolvers on their belts, and they were not security guards. probably they knew he had a gun, and no one cared until he shot.

Eh, history is full of crazies who sought, or at least were willing, to sacrifice themselves in order to fuel a revolution. Some have been successful; most were forgotten by the evening news.

Seems the difference is how well organized their paranoia was, and whether they had a following prior to their going all blastypants.

At last reports everyone is trying to piece together who exactly this guy was and why he did what he did but Libs armed with half quotes and innuendos are already claiming this was because of the Tea Party and Sarah Palin...

And some conservatives were pointing to some Daily Kos posting by some guy saying Giffords was "dead to him" for not supporting Pelosi as minority leader as evidence that she was shot for not being liberal enough. And Free Republic crashed for over an hour under all the congratulatory postings saying how great it was she was shot (the site's since been scrubbed). What's your point? People jump to conclusions?

all of this will take place without you and a host of other idiots mentioning that at least one of the people killed today (Judge John Roll) is a Republican.
He was also hated by some for being seen as soft on immigration and received numerous death threats for it. Crazy guess here... the people saying they wanted to kill him for letting some illegal immigrants file a lawsuit probably weren't bleeding heart liberals. Again, what was your point?

Boy, I can't for imagine believe that a guy out to kill liberals would have any interest in the gold standard and the value of US currency against the value of gold.

That's CRAZY talk!
