Seriously, everyone should understand that losing weight and/or getting more fit takes more than spending too much on a pair of fancy tennies.

Has anyone tried out the 'toning' shoes that are all over the market right now?

Do you like them?

My husband has a pair. He has a bad back. His mother was sure (cuz her sister told her) that these toning shoes would fix it right up. So she gave him a pair for his birthday last year. The shoes came with a cd instructing you how to walk, a keychain thingy, and a reusable shopping bag. They cost well over a hundred bucks. They made his back hurt more. His doctor suggested he not wear them and see if his back hurt less.

Anywoo, New Balance is getting sued as they claim the shoes help to tone you up and slim you down. Funny, I thought it would be Sketchers facing the lawsuit - I'm sure they were the first to market these things.

I like the idea (don't know if they work though). Too bad they look like full ****** shoes.

Flea had a pair but I think they got lost or something. Also, she became pregnant so that's probably not a great test case. They were sandals though, not running shoes.

I can perhaps see them having some minor impact in toning muscle but that's different from losing weight. And I don't even know that they tone anything. It's one of those "Well, it sounds like it makes sense" things but that's also what makes people buy clasp-on devices to "ionize" their gasoline and improve their mileage by 300%.

Hmmm, perhaps they could market them as enhancing fertilization.

You should purchase a pair of heat moldable insoles. I know YourSole started them, but there may be others in the market now. They form to the shape of your foot and create better stability and support for your feet, which obviously helps the back. The retail for something like $40 and have a 2 year warranty. They can also be taken out and placed into any pair of shoes with ease (unlike floppy regular insoles). worth a shot.

I'm going to get those for Ray. Thanks Ugly!

I'm on the fence when it comes to the toning up sneakers. They're supposed to encourage the more sedentary people to walk and get around, hence more calorie burning and weight loss.

But if I want a nice toned ***, I'll stick with lunges and squats.

That's not going to keep you fit into old age. You need some more cardio. Also smoking, even dope, will eventually impact your lung capacity. You might try brownies or that vaporizer thing that someone here mentioned.

I might suggest the heat-molded insoles to my hubby as well.

Custom orthotic insoles. Prescribed by a doctor and custom shaped to your body. Cost anywhere from $350-$550 here but most health plans cover some/all of it. Absolutely 100% worth every penny. They force you to walk correctly instead of using your bone damaging muscle memory movements. It'll hurt at first because he's using muscles he's not accustomed to and forcing his bones into movements he's not used to but in short order he'll start feeling way better.

I have a friend who has the sketchers version and honestly, after 6 months+ of wearing them, I really don't see a difference in her. So yea... the shoes are probably just snake oil imo.

This is what the heat moldable soles mimic. Not quite as effective, but better bang for the dollar.

Problem is who is heating them? You could potentially do more damage than good. Most people will shape them to make themselves more comfortable, which is the opposite of what you should be doing.

They're designed as idiot resistant. There's no shaping them. You heat them up for 2 minutes in your oven, place them in your shoes and stand on them for 30secs.

Doesn't sound all that idiot proofresistant to me :)

But I might look into them, I've been needing a good insole for some time.

I have a bad back too; I'm thinking that an inversion table would be my best bet.

Although I'm sure shoes that actually fit me properly would help a bit.

The interesting thing about these shoes to me is that they seem to imitate what has been used in marching bands for years and years and years. Marching band shoes have almost always had a rolled heel to help with technique uniformity, and I can say quite honestly that this rolled-heel marching (whether assisted or not) has led to a set of rather massive calves on many of those in band. That being said, the band I was in is one of the top in the state, so we did several hours each week of basic technique.

Will walking rolled-heeled be more effective than regular walking? Yes.
Will these shoes encourage such a thing? It's quite possible, depending on the wearer.
Will they magically make walking through the store a brutal workout? No.

It's a push.

It seems unlikely to me that anyone who's desperate enough to spend money on some arcane gadget or book of esoteric ninja weight-loss techniques rather than face up to the substantial truth of the matter, that losing weight and geting fit are a lot of work, is ever going to reach their goal. At least, not until they bone up, smarten up and change their wayward ways.

Its what all those slim people in the 3rd world wear to keep in shape. It means they can keep eating 3000 calories of processed sugar and fat every day, whilst sitting on their butts and driving everywhere.

What! You thought they could stay so skinny without toning shoes? Lol...
