After initially suggesting that Director of National Intelligence James Clapper’s inability to answer a question from ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer about the arrests of 12 suspected terrorists in London was because her question was too “ambiguous,” the Obama administration acknowledged Wednesday morning that retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Clapper had not been briefed about the arrests at the time of the interview.

Yeah this guys on top of taking out those islamic jihadists.

My thoughts exactly. Had varus criticized those responsible for ensuring he gets the information he needed, I would have possibly agreed with him (you know, if I had any additional info and he linked a source). Luckily for my sanity, he's just retarded as usual.

@varus, would a republican have magically known about the events had no one briefed him?

Good news source you have there.

Only 3 of the 12 men were arrested in London. Five of them weren't even arrested in England but in Cardiff.

The best varus headline would have been Obama Intelligence Team Collectively Broken.

Of course, collectively is, like, 4 syllables? Too much to expect.

Hours earlier, reports flooded cable news shows about arrests of 12 people in London suspected of being part of a potential terrorist plot. In the interview, Ms. Sawyer turned to Mr. Clapper and made an indirect reference to the still-developing incident.

“First of all, London,” she said. “How serious is it? Any implication that it was coming here? Director Clapper?”

The look on Mr. Clapper’s face, and his temporary silence, suggested that he had no idea what she was talking about. He hesitated before saying, “London?”

After a moment or two, he was saved by John Brennan, the White House homeland security adviser, who was also part of the interview, along with Janet Napolitano, the secretary of the department of homeland security. Mr. Brennan explained that Ms. Sawyer was referring to the London arrests.

A few minutes later, Ms. Sawyer returned to Mr. Clapper. “I was a little surprised you didn’t know about London,” she said.

“Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t,” he said, shaking his head.

Not knowing enough about the actual event, I could guess that Clapper was simply woefully uninformed by his staff about an important development which would be a legitimate source of criticism or that the event didn't have direct implications on the US and Clapper simply hadn't been briefed yet (Brennan knew about it but wasn't racing back to DC). Neither really supports the notion that Clapper is an idiot.

Well if he was a Republican he would have just told a fabulous story that resulted in a 7 year war with someone that had nothing to do with anything in his story.

ABC wrote:
Clapper, she explained, had been “working throughout the day on important intelligence matters, including monitoring military and political developments on the Korean Peninsula, providing answers to questions concerning the ratification of the START nuclear treaty, and other classified issues. He wasn't immediately briefed on London because it didn't appear to have a homeland nexus and there was no immediate action by the DNI required. Nevertheless, he should have been briefed on the arrests, and steps have been taken to ensure that he is in the future. The intelligence community as a whole was fully aware of this development and tracking it closely.”

Asked about Clapper not having been briefed on the arrests, White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan said "Jim Clapper is, I think, the consummate DNI. He was working on developments in the Korean Peninsula, in terms of political/military developments. He was focused on trying to provide support to the Congress as far as the START treaty deliberations were concerned. He was engaged in a variety of classified matters."

Brennan continued: "Should he have been briefed by his staff on those arrests? Yes. And I know there was breathless attention by the media about these arrests, and it was constantly on the news networks. I'm glad that Jim Clapper is not sitting in front of the TV 24 hours a day and monitoring what's coming out of the media. What he is doing is focusing on those intelligence issues that the president expects him to focus on and to make sure that we don't have conflict in different parts of the world."

Source.

Should he have known? Yes. Was it his fault that he didn't? No. Is it a huge problem? No. Was he busy doing all the other sh*t he has to deal with? Probably. Do I consider Korea the bigger issue? Hell yes. Does it worry me that he didn't know? Not at all.

For all you know, he was scheduled to be completely briefed just after that interview. If the US was still investigating, there's really no SPECIFIC reason he needs to know about it. It didn't happen on our soil, it isn't in our jurisdiction and there were no deaths involved.

Actually, considering the WEALTH of other, more important topics, it's stupid that the 12 arrests were even part of that interview. I would much rather know about the highly shifting political landscape we have with two nations. You know, stuff that's actually important to us.

Yeah, that's what liberal leaders do. You need to ask Sarah Palin a question 47 times before she'll answer a god damn question (and that's on the things she does have an answer to, however wrong it is).

And Obama's staff is inadequate? **** Cheney shot a 78 year old man in the face and gave the guy a heart attack. While trying to shoot a quail and "didn't see" him. Is it just me, or are quails a LOT smaller than a human?

But hey keep telling yourself it's not that important. Clinton did the same thing for 8yrs which allowed terrorists to think they could get away with 911. I guess W showed them.

They pretty much did get away with it since he focused our military in Iraq (the country that had nothing to do with 9/11)

Which at the time was the greatest threat to stability in the ME. Yeah overthrowing homicidal mass murdering dictator that continuously threatened our interests in a particular region is just terrible.

Just curious, what do you mean by "our interests"?
