For anyone who will be awake for the next 1-3 hours, and lives in central/eastern America/Canada, you'll be able to see a total lunar eclipse tonight. The moon will begin to glow red and disfigure starting at 1 AM and climaxing around 2:30-3 AM, depending on where you live (further east, then earlier).

Tonight's is a rare event, in that the eclipse is happening on the longest night of the year. The eclipse is occurring as the seasons change. :) It's an extremely rare occurance (the last time was in the 17th century). There's no scientific meaning to that--it's just a fun fact. :P

I'll be up working on finals crap, so I'll definitely check it out.

P.S. It's starting, if people who don't intend to stay up later want to see even a small part of it.

Went to have a look from the top of a hill out west of Auckland but it was cloudy /sadface

But! As a contribution to the thread I thought I'd post a picture that I took of the first eclipse that I ever saw, and only one I managed to get half decent pictures of, from Guadaloupe in 1998.

Screenshot <---click here if you like eclipses.

I found out about this today. Dammit! No one here or on Facebook bothered to say anything until after I had gone to bed. Yes, it's all about me, people.

It was raining here, so I went to bed, trusting that A) the sun will come up anyway; and B) somewhere, someone will post videos of the eclipse.

I tried to take pictures, but it wasn't happening. The light pollution at Rutgers is massive, so the darkened moon didn't stand a chance. :(

You obviously missed my posts too, Nads.

And it was too much rain and bad weather for us in San Diego too. But I'm not sure, I slept through it all. Marathon run Christmas shopping last night left me dead tired. I only have 3 gifts left (I thought I had only 1 gift left last night, but realized I forgot someone).

I went out about midnight last night and it was too cloudy to see anything. Much relieved I'd not feel obligated to stay up until 3am, I went in and went to bed.

I was able to see the process of the eclipse, but then clouds moved in almost immediately after and covered only the moon.
