Sick and I are taking the kids on a surprise trip to FL as their big Christmas gift. They have no clue, and we're hoping to keep mum about our actual destination until we get there. We're keeping our schedule super flexible in case we need to rearrange plans for weather/whiny kids.
Our basic goals are to hit Sea World, Islands of Adventure and possibly Disney Studios. We might even hit the Space center. But we'll be there for 6 days and have time thats free and I'm looking for other kid friendly things to look into thats not too far from Orlando. Any suggestions? Im looking for things aside from the theme parks. If you know the area and it helps we'll be staying at the Nickelodean Hotel.

Im so frikking excited!!!

I'm a couple hours away, but the only time I've gone to the city is to fly out of it or for a Disney day-trip - sorry! But it sounds like you'll have a blast and the kids will love it Smiley: smile

It looks like you'll be hitting up most of the hot spots, not sure what to say really. Maybe just make sure you hit EVERYTHING that each place has to offer. Many times people will skip parts just to move on.

Also, you could have just a beach day or something like that too. Best of luck, I'm sure you'll have a great time!

Smiley: dubious
My thermometer read 37 degrees this morning in Central Florida. I think a beach trip is out.

yeah we were looking to do Sea World this Monday, but it's forecast to be 45. I'm thinking thats a bit cold for Sea World, let alone the beach. We might hit the Space Center that day instead and do Sea World later in the week if it warms up.

Sick mentioned a Gator Park he found. Anything like that would be cool.

Merritt Island is fun. There are boardwalk trails, lots of critters, the beach, birds, gators. It's only about 45mins from Orlando. Pack a lunch. Not much for the way of food once you get to the park.

I've been several times (not lately though), but I don't know what your kids would be in to. Universal Studios and Disneyland are both decent (MGM sucked at the time, but a couple key exhibits were closed, and I think there were more indoor attractions if it's cold). If they're not really into Disney, I'd probably recommend Universal over Disneyland. If you have older kids, Epcot may be more fun than the "ride" parks. Not sure how reliable animal exhibits like SeaWorld and Anheuser Busch are this time of year though.

There are some pretty badass putt-putt courses there too, but I don't have any names.

Apparently, Christmas is one of the busiest times at Disney, so I'd imagine the rest are running full tilt. When I was there in February, right before Spring Break, I was told by everyone that then was the slowest time fo the year for them. Basically, the 2nd week of January until the 2nd week of February. And even then, most of the animal attractions at SeaWorld were open.

Huh, I would have thought they would close a lot of the exhibits during the winter months, but I've never actually been in the winter so I'll take your word at it.

I like the chicken idea. Smiley: lol

Yeah its hard because we have such a wide range of ages between the kids, to satisfy them all. Islands has Harry Potter, Jurasic Park, Seuss, Fantasyland, etc... things all of the boys love whether or not they go on the rides. Sea World will be good for them, and we only thought of Disney Studios because we heard they have a kick *** Star Wars/ Indiana Jones shows, which all 3 boys are in love with. I've been to all the other parks, and while I love Epcot, I love getting drunk around the world, and I dont think we can share that experience with the boys for another 13-20 years Smiley: lol Otherwise it's not really worth the money for a family of five to go.

If it was warmer we'd hit the beach. I think Im going to take a look at what the hotel offers. I know last time they did character breakfasts and had kid games where the kids actually got slimed. i know Zavi and Ashe would love that

They may go offline for extensive renovations/maintenance, but they don't shut them down just to shut them down, or so it appeared. I don't think anything was offline at Disney when we went, but Seaworld had some stuff offline, however all were in the area where they were building a new rollercoaster.

It's a bit further SW but if you head toward Fort Meyers you can check out the Manatee Park. It will be the right time of year to see them up close.

Oh, by the way, Star Tours in Disney Hollywood Studios is shut down right now. They're doing a revamp of the ride and it'll be shut down for quite a while yet. They can still do the Jedi Training though.

There's also the Ford/Edison house if you're over by Fort Meyers, but it's not that super interesting to kids as I recall (especially if either of you are plaque-readers).

I'm just curious how long of a drive we're talking about here. I just can't figure out how one could manage to convince the kids that we're just driving to the store and then hop on the freeway and drive for hours and manage to not forget anything they need, or have some other disaster occur. Super props if she pulls it off I suppose!

If your kids are into Harry Potter, there's that new theme park in Univ. Studios which I hear was extremely well done.

9 hour drive, and we pulled it off Smiley: cool After 2 hours we gave them a card that said we were going on an adventure so sit back and enjoy the ride. And thats what they did. Each day we did something new and never once did they know our destination until we got there
