Fun fact, my girlfriend's family is southern Baptist as well. I went to one of the services, and it was kinda fun to see people stand up and scream "AMEN!" after the pastor said something. A lot of overweight older white folks in the church were getting worked up over the sermon (not sure exactly what is was, something about how abortion is the equivalent to the Egyptians tossing Hebrew babies to crocodiles).

If following your religious beliefs is so important to you, why do you ignore the teachings of Jesus Christ? Read the book of Matthew sometime; he tells you to sell all your possessions and give them to the poor. He says to pray in your closet, not in the street. I'm sure you gather in groups (probably Sunday) and chant prayers by rote just as Jesus instructed you not to in his Sermon on the Mount.

Also, if a Christian were to sue you in court and win, would you give more than awarded as instructed? That's also in the Sermon on the Mount. Sad that you would need an atheist to point these things out to you.

No, it's sad that an atheist referenced the bible to make a point. Pick a side, dammit.

I don't, for the most part.

He does not; perhaps if you spent more time in church and less pretending you hate God you might have taken the time to actually understand what Christ was talking about in matthew and luke. I'll help you out.

Ummm I think you totally missed the point I was making. If varus uses the bible as a guide to his life and then turns around and ignores entire passages of it, it is wholly appropriate for me to bring up those passages to point out his hypocrisy.

I'm not saying that the teachings of the Bible are valid or should be followed, I'm merely pointing out that it's hypocritical to follow one part of the Bible and then ignore the parts you don't like.

For example, let's say you're a Christian listening to a Muslim preach to you about how he lives his life according to Islam and says "I don't drink alcohol, I'm a Muslim" while eating a pork chop. You don't have to believe in the Qu'ran or believe that eating pork is bad to point out that HIS beliefs/holy book says he shouldn't eat pork. Are you "taking the side" of the Qu'ran by pointing out his hypocrisy? No.

@varus: How could I hate something I don't believe exists? Do you hate Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny? If the Christian God DID exist, I probably would hate him if he was accurately depicted in the bible; I mean a God who condones genocide, slavery, and rape? Yeah, I wouldn't exactly worship a monster like that, but go ahead if you want; I respect the 1st amendment. But hate something I don't believe exists? Not even possible. I can comment on how evil the emperor from Star Wars is, as depicted, but that doesn't mean I hate him since he's fictional and all :)

Smiley: laugh

That link is a hoot! Some great quotes:
Quote:
If christians can agree with anything regarding this command, it is that it could not mean what it seems to plainly say!

In other words, "Well, sure, Jesus SAID this, but in my opinion, he really means THIS instead!"
Quote:
Jesus adds that we must even hate our own life in this world if we are to successfully follow him. He says we must be rejected and ridiculed by the world as he was, and be willing to die for him if necessary.
...
Is it material things? No, it is not. It is relationships with natural relatives who are unwilling to follow him too.

No wonder poor Varus is so messed up. "Forsaking all" means cutting out all non-"true"-Christians... but you can totally keep all your wealth. As long as you're miserable.

Well hey, that does sound like you, Varus! Forsaking others, hoarding your money, being miserable, and convinced you're a good Christian. Kudos!

Wow, what a thoughtful retort! Basically you went with "nah nah nah nah poo poo". People with severe brain trauma have better debating skills than you. I know it's difficult to defend your beliefs with actual logic or reasoning, so I can't really blame you for just name calling and having nothing of substance to say since you obviously would get destroyed in an actual debate since you have no moral or logical ground to stand on :)

But please continue to just name call and avoid actual discussion and defense of your indefensible beliefs, it's awesome to see you struggle to come up with anything with substance and have to resort to childish antics.

And I hate to own you with your own bible again, but won't Jesus be mad at you for ignoring 1Peter 3:15?

Have a good day, Mr. Cafeteria Christian :)

Not quite as thoughtful as "you're a hypocrite" I know but it's got it's own unique charm.

I don't have to defend my beliefs, that's the great thing about being a Christian. Why do you feel the need to attack them?

It's truly sad you're filled with so much hate. However; the path to redemption is through Christ.

Pointing out the ridiculous is not "attacking". Btw, what is the difference between me questioning the reasoning of your religious beliefs and you questioning the reasoning of other people's political beliefs. Oh yea, it's the whole hypocrisy thing coming out again.

And if you actually read your Bible, you'd find you are charged with defending your beliefs when challenged. Check out 1Peter 3:15 sometime.

You're extremely childish because you have no retorts, but simple insults. I'm sorry that you're scared to actually debate me, but it's not my fault you've chosen an indefensible worldview. I know you'll just come back with more weak insults, but try something above the 3rd grade level for once.

Btw, Christianity is filled with much more hate than I could ever muster. I mean, you guys believe that unless you believe in Jesus, you're damned. It doesn't matter how good of a person you are; you're deserving of eternal punishment simply for not being in the right club. Sooooo, you might not want to preach to me about hate, sparky :)

Also, I've never advocated the torture and crucifixion of an innocent human being to pay for the crimes of others and calling it justice. It's like a judge saying to a serial killer during sentencing "hey don't worry, no death penalty for you, since I love you sooo much I'm gonna crucify my own son instead as a sign of love and sacrifice. Just accept this gift and you can walk free, but you have to be a good person from now on and repent"

I'm sure if that guy killed your family you'd worship the judge, right? I mean look how loving he is and the sacrifice he made.

Looking forward to your one sentence reply with zero substance, it means I'm still winning :)

Sorry, I think I hit the point dead on! Your link says "This is what was said by Jesus, but that's not what I believe it to mean" and then spent the rest of the article following up his own beliefs. One of those things was his belief that Jesus said "If you don't hate your life, you're not following me." Another one was that you're completely allowed to attain and keep materials wealth, but you need to distance yourself from friends and family who don't believe like you do.

It's your source, bud, not mine. I don't make this stuff up - I just point out what it says! Smiley: grin

Of course you didn't read my post, because you're a coward :)

And no, just because I think something is ridiculous does not make it so, but the fact that you can't come up with a single response to anything specific I've said proves that you have nothing logical or reasonable to stand on, making your argument ridiculous QED. If you had actual reasons to defend your beliefs instead of sticking your fingers in your ears and running away, then you would name them, but you can't. That's the very definition of a ridiculous belief :) Ha!
