Apparently the British government is selling the HMS Invincible to help balance the budget or some such. If interested you have until Jan 5th to put in a bid.

I like the "In Stock". I can just picture "Man, aircraft carriers are backordered!"

Ironically, there is a good possibility either the french or the russians will end up buying her. Too bad she's not nuclear, and I don't have an extra eleventy bajilion dollars handy.

A mobile, nuclear powered, aircraft carrying wombat base of doom...

No, I think it's a good thing that it's not nuclear and you don't have eleventy bajillion dollars handy.

As of Nov 24, the Joint Harrier Force stopped operations along with HMS Arc Royal. The RN has lost carrier operations with fixed wing aircraft, I think that's a first since carriers were introduced to the Royal Navy. 2 new carriers are in the works, but there is already talk of selling off the second carrier once it's finished. Carrier operations aren't slated to pick up until 2020 with the F-35. That's a long time to lose a whole range of skill sets with running a carrier. The defense cuts on equipment programs hurt in the US, I can't imagine how the UK is fairing with bleeding capabilities left and right. At least that is how it looks from the proposed budget cuts.

No worries. If the French buy it, they can protect you.

You should see if they accept rate-ups as payment.

I realize that nautically speaking female pronouns have historically been used to describe ships, but in a 2010 sales ad it just sounds silly.

I know nothing about the second-hand aircraft carrier industry and assumed someone would purchase it for salvage or something. I guess you don't balance the budget by selling stuff for scrap prices.

How gently used? I'd be a little concerned with all the seamen that have been inside her.

Hey, I'm smarter than I give myself credit for.

You know who should totally purchase it? Argentina. That would be lulzy.

Nah - happened in the 1970s when the last of our traditional carriers was retired, before the 'through-deck cruisers' appeared. The Navy kept its Phantoms for a year or so, before they were transferred to the RAF.

I wonder if Argentina is keeping up with this news story.... Smiley: sly
Not sure a few Typhoons at Mount Pleasant will be enough to deter them this time.

HMS Invincible is for sale by tender. Laid down in 1973 at Vickers Shipbuilding, Barrow-in-Furness, she was completed in 1980. She is currently stable for tow, subject to buyer confirmation.
Displacement - Current 17000 Tonnes
Estimated metal weight - 10000 Tonnes
Estimated metal % - 95% mild steel
Length - OA 210m, W/L 193m
Draught - Fwd 5.2m, Mid 5.8m, Aft 5.8m
Beam - Extreme 35m, Ex-walkways 32m, W/L 27.53m
Height - 46m (estimated at current draught

Now why the @#%^ would I want an Aircraft Carrier in this condition? Anyone know where I can get some engines, generators, and pumps cheap?

I can imagine a conglomeration of Somali pirates pooling together their resources to buy this, and ten thousand outboard motors.
