Trains suck. Amtrak from Chicago, IL to Washington DC is 18 hours. I know from experience that it's a 12-13 hour drive with rest stops. It also costs $133.00 which is more expensive than a nonstop 90 minute flight on Southwest. Basically, it has absolutely nothing going for it unless you just like being on a train.

1000x this. I don't see the point in taking a train when it is usually more expensive and takes longer.....
Granted, if expedience is crucial to the nature of your journey, then yes, flying is always the most efficient (and sometimes even cheaper, thank you priceline) mode of travel.
That known, I'll still find something alluring about crawling along the county at a leisurely pace. Staring at trees and passing quaint small towns, reading a book, or even just stretching out and napping most the way. It's a world away from the stress and terror induced anxiety of most airports. At Bush International in Houston, Texas there is a warning every 15 minutes over the loudspeakers warning that, "Any jokes or terror related comments made in bad taste will get you arrested."
To blow things up(don't say that in Houston); It's not the destination, it's the journey. And whenever I travel by air, I find myself stressed out and disoriented(jet lag), and have a harder time enjoying the hours that I was supposed to have saved (for what?)
Sorry for taking this off-topic!
EDIT: Come to think of it, you summed it up perfectly in that last sentence of yours, Jophiel.
