It's not just wine. There's ample research that says that light drinkers live longer than abstainers. Recommended drinking practices are roughly no more than 2 drinks for men and 1 for women five nights a week. For reference, one drink is roughly a bottle of beer, glass of wine, or shot of hard liquor. This isn't due to the antioxidant properties of wine and beer necessarily-- alcohol is a vasorelaxant, which can reduces the risk of coronary events.
Of course, excessive drinking or binge drinking is harmful to the body. Probably someone my age has little if anything to gain from even moderate drinking, but also little harm in moderation. But modest drinking is something to consider for older persons.
