Pope's condom comments welcomed by campaign groups

Quote:
Pope Benedict said during a visit to Cameroon last year that handing out condoms might actually make HIV infection worse, drawing criticism from several EU states.

In his latest comments, however, he said the use of condoms might be justified in exceptional circumstances.

He gave the example of male prostitutes where, he said, using condoms to prevent the spread of AIDS could be seen as an act of moral responsibility, even though condoms were "not really the way to deal with the evil of HIV infection".

So you heard it here, folks. It's official.

Slip on a rubber and slip it in the Shitter. It's the Cafflick way.

It's funny because otherwise I'd have to think about how his previous comment has condemned innumerable followers to agonizing deaths.

Odd, my initial response was "The Pope is still against birth control."

I mean, I guess you can try and twist it whatever way you want, but in the end, the Catholic Church cares little to nothing for STDs and instead worries about control over its members... at least, that's what I get out of it.

Note: Nonpracticing Catholic here since, oh, 10th grade or so.

This site has really opened my eyes about the pope's position on prophylactics.

He forgot to add avoiding leaving DNA evidence in the altar boys is also an exceptional circumstance.

Update - One of the Pope's cardinal-thingies asked him to clarify whether he meant 'male prostitutes' or 'prostitutes' (Some tranlsation issues about genfer assumptions between GZe Cherman and Eyetalian languages.

BBC Online Article

Quote:
The Pope's meaning was questioned because the Italian translation of the book used the feminine form of the word for prostitute, whereas the original German used the masculine.

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said he had personally asked the Pope if there was a serious, important problem in the choice of the masculine over the feminine.

"He told me 'No'," Fr Lombardi said. "The problem is this... It's the first step of taking responsibility, of taking into consideration the risk of the life of another with whom you have a relationship."

"This is if you're a woman, a man, or a transsexual," he added.

So it sounds like Il Papa is acknowledging that while sexual responsibility is important (agreed) and the procreational act of sex is sacred (no problem with that), a condom is justified if you're concerned about STIs.

Huzzah.

And even tailmon gets a mention!

While funny, and I partially agree, I also concede that there have been other churchly moral progresses made as society progresses and the church quietly drops certain rules of a 2000 years out of date morals guide.

It's good to see the Pope starting to relax his sphincter on some of these issues. One day he won't even mind when the issue of gay marriage is knocking at the door.

Totally. We've gone from calling for the eradication of the plague that was Islam in Jerusalem to the covering up of old men f'ucking little boys. Moral progress!

While the use of condoms obviously puts a huge dent in the spread of AIDS, it is not the AIDS virus that the Catholic Church is concerned with. Heck, I'm sure as far as the pope cares, those sinners deserve their suffering because "God is just and right".

No, the Catholic Church doesn't endorse condoms because condoms are an effective measure against pregnancy. Not that should be news to anyone here. Anyways, less babies means less little minds for the Church to warp. More babies, more zealots.

Vatican City doesn't really care how many of it's followers are suffering. They only care about how many suffering followers they can accumulate.

You should make a conscious effort not to post until you can add something that hasn't already been added or stipulated to.
