This time of year in my neck of the woods, Starlings gather in numbers for the winter and form swooping 'clouds' as they flock together ready to roost for the night.

Had to pull over on the way home to watch a spectacular performance by a large flock (I'm guessing 50,000 or so birds). Didn't think to get the camera out (bugger), but here's a clip of the phenomenon that always has me mesmerised.

Starlings on Otmoor

Cool or what?

ETA - another good clip

That is pretty cool. Makes you wonder how much and in what form them birds are communicating with each other.

Sorry you're getting old, mate.

Starlings are nasty, filthy little creatures. I hope you fired a cannon full of old nails at the flock.

The black flies and mosquitoes used to do the same thing in the boggy suburbs of Buffalo in which I briefly lived.

Not really quite as mesmerizing though.

We have these orange tipped blackbirds which flock together in massive hordes around the fields nearby. I think it is getting a bit late for the truly monumental China-invasion sized hordes.

I like it when the swallows return to San Juan Capistrano. It's pretty when they're all flying in.

Ok. My reference could not have been that subtle. I don't even get a *groan* or a Fava bean retort? C'mon... Starlings, screaming lambs? You guys are shaking my faith in internet humanity and whatnot!

You're the expert on gay, so we'll have to take your word on it.
