Simpson/Bowles US deficit reduction planFollow

#1 Nov 15 2010 at 11:42 AM Rating: Good
I endorse this wholeheartedly.

Highlights:

- Raise retirement age (in phases, over time)

- 15 cent per gallon gas tax

- Eliminate most major income tax breaks, but also lowering tax rates somewhat

I'm didn't see in the article what the age they recommended was for retirement. I think we need to raise the age, but maybe not as far as some would go. I'd top it out at 68 or 69. Keeping older folks in the work pool will reduce the number of jobs needing filling.

I don't like this. It's too much, too regressive, too burdensome on those already struggling to get work, get to work and stretch their palsy little dollars.

Without any specifics, this seems a bit thoughtless, and could very well be counter-productive.

If one prepares properly, you can still retire early but not draw government benefits until you want. I'm ok with this.

I approve of this *only* if the accompanying state taxes on gasoline are going to be lowered 15 cents. Otherwise this is a regressive tax that will only serve to hurt the lower and middle classes.

I've been for this all along. I'm also in favor of a flat tax rate period. The more you make, the more you pay.
