Oh right, you only want to talk serious politics, right? Perfect!

Where does this woman's accent come from?

Quote:
Mary Kissel
Editor, editorial page, The Wall Street Journal Asia.

Mary Kissel is editor of The Wall Street Journal Asia's editorial page. She joined the Journal in Hong Kong in 2004 as writer of the Money & Investing section's Heard in Asia column. Previously, she worked for Goldman Sachs, an investment bank, in New York and London.

She may have worked for the Devil's corp. but she has the voice of an angel. The perfect American accent, of all the many varied succulent American accents.

Mary Kissel starts at 12:20 in. Sorry I can't link you straight to the second I want, if you could identify her accent for me, you'll have to slide the time bar yourself.

D'oh!

I'm not finding any good American sound of her through google. Maybe an American will have better luck. Or an Asian, as Kissel is based in Asia now. As a second rate voice, Tea Leoni's voice in Deep Impact also sounds like Mary Kissel. Perhaps someone can identify the regional accent from Tea's voice in that film?

Gotta say I don't agree with a lot of Kissel's economics, or some of her foreign policy advice.

I really wouldn't identify that as any particular accent, just sounds normal to me. But I'm not a linguist.

The second example is my fav. Ok, if you can't hear her accent, maybe her's is yours too. What region do you live in if you don't mind sharing?

Not hearing the accent either, so I'm gonna go with a southern Great Lakes region sound. Ohio or Indiana would be my guess.

I live in the great lakes region as well, west Michigan. I think we are accent-less (expect those Yoopers). We speak the right way. Everyone else has an accent. Smiley: smile

She does have a gruffness to her voice that kind of shows up occasionally at the end of her words. It makes it sound like you are going to hear an inflection or something at the end of her words, but it just gets cut short.

I wish I had the Chicago accent the nearly all of my family has. I can instantly tell when someone is from the Chicago area by their accent. Not being able to process 'r', 'w', and 'c' sounds, has given me an accent that no one can quite place, though most guess maybe New England or even occasionally English.

While I spent several summers in White Plains, most of my life I've lived in Maryland. Though my first 14 months, I did lived in Chicago and then 4 years in Pittsburgh, PA, Before I went to a school with a speech therapist to try and correct my mangle attempts to speak something that sounded like English.

I was born in Connecticut, and spent the first three years of my life there. My parents told me when I was young, first started talking, I talked with a New England accent. Any time my dad is watching New Yankee Workshop he tells me "You used to talk like that".

Then I went to South Carolina, and my brother was born there. Then 8 years later we move to Michigan. Some people have said they thought I had a southern accent, but that was only after learning I lived in the south. Personally I think my accent is almost non-existent. My brother had a real heavy southern accent when we first came to Michigan. He did learn to speak and spent most of his life down in SC. It didn't help that he was literally tongue tied.
