My cousin's son is five years old (?) and likes to play dress up in princess outfits or play with dolls and that sort of thing. My cousin and my wife think it's just a gas while I can tell that her husband isn't exactly thrilled with it.
I think he's a gas because let's face it, it's not the dressing up so much as the innate panache with which he does so, and I have always been one to appreciate someone who knows how to be themselves.
I think this is why I've never minded this sort of behavior, I have no GLBT issues, and don't think much of it in general because I've always prized a person that can show individuality in a homogenous society. I dressed up all the time in school, and I frankly never gave a damn what anyone thought. If either of my children were gay, I would be the most kick-*** mother of a gay you ever saw. I'd march in the parades with my rainbow wig on, because my kids are the ****, and if they are gays then they would be the best goddamn gays ever and I would see to it.
As for facing ignorance, everyone except the most privilged WASPy males do that, and it builds character. I can't shield them from life, only give them tools with which to cope, a safe haven at home and advocate like hell when the opportunity arises.
