I'd buy a few dozen computers and game consoles and make a LAN/video game party room/arcade.

It's still progressing. Controller box is theoretically on its way though backordered. After that just need to finish building the enclosure, get a few more small aprts, put everythign together and go to work!

I have to space out one side to clear the carrier cable and figure out how best to mount the back run for the Y axis, but other than that it is progressing.

While I like the movie house idea, this is a better fit for me actually.

Eventually, it will do smaller scale, not as fast versions of this:

These are actually the larger, older model brother of the one I have.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQT3-5WGYAc

Mine will mill a 5 inch tall by 16 inch wide by 24 inch long object. I plan to use it to make:
radio control helicopter custom parts,
computer custom parts (carbon fiber cases, etc)
Electric Violas (no one really makes them, and my brother plays viola, seems like a decent niche market)
various artsy things, wood inlays, pictures carved into soft stone, etc.
Other things as I think of them.

I have a program that takes pictures from a web camera and a laser pointer and uses them as a 3d scanner that seems to work pretty well, so I'll use that as a starting point for alot of these. My CAD skills are pretty decent too, so I should be able to make some neat stuff.

I'd start up a bar that had a stage & host live music in it. There'd be no poetry, spoken word, techno (& it's derivatives), "pop", or jazz ever played within said bar. I'd also have the authority to kick out ****** bands & control the jukebox when there is no live music.

And on Sunday nights it'd have Burlesque.

I'm thinking I'd like to own a little independent movie house - mostly because the only theater within 30 miles of me is one ugly old multi-screened Regal. But also I think movies on-the-big-screen, old, new, foreign, documentary, etc etc, are once again becoming a social outlet.

At my movie house I'd like to have a small private theater that people can rent out, offer up themed events, support local and start-up movie-makers, maybe even hold or sponsor workshops for amateur movie-makers...stuff like that.

What kind of business would you attempt?

This is exactly the kind of business i've been dreaming of starting for a few years, a place to see older movies on the big screen again. I want to make it kind of a youth center too as a place to hang out. The only independent theater here in Phoenix closed about a year ago. I wouldn't know where to start, so it's something to sit on the back burner for a decade or so.

The other idea i've been toying with has been to open a video bar/club, mainly as a way to create a huge music and music video achive :) The whole place would be filled with monitors playing music videos and i'd take requests.

How would you afford the licensing fees for all the artists and distributors?

Like I said, I'm not really sure where to start. Possibly I could get away with it the same way radio stations do and call it free advertising/publicity :)

I'm speaking with zero experience here but I don't think the licensing is too terrible for a single venue like a club. You wind up getting a blanket license from ASCAP or whoever and run with it. I don't know that video licensing is much worse than plain music licensing like every other club.

Making up some out-of-my-*** numbers on the ASCAP's rate calculator, I got $10,000 annually for 8 hours of music a night, 7 days a week in a club with $750,000 in revenue.

A productive day at work!

You wouldn't be able to get a blanket license from just ASCAP. You would also have to get licenses from BMI and SESAC. I don't think there are others... A publisher can choose which company to register with, and ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC are the big three. To have any music played in any retail establishment, you have to get licenses with these three companies.

Not that it will make a huge dent in the profits, of course, but just putting that out there.
